Introduction Module 2: VASC System Requirements
As a VeriFone Authorized Service Contractor you will need to know, become familiar with, and understand the system requirements needed in order to perform your job successfully. Would a carpenter go out to repair a house without his tools and his toolbox? Of course not. The same holds true for the VASC. There is a list of tools that are required in order for you to be a successful VeriFone Service Contractor. Without having access to these tools you will not be able to perform your job successfully. You will need to download software at new installations, upgrading the software when newer versions have been released, and when replacing specific hardware components on the terminals.

In order for you to be successful as a VASC your laptop will need to include the following requirements. Pentium II, 450 MHz (or better) 128 MB of RAM (or more) 1.0 gig hard drive (or larger) CD-Rom

Some laptops no longer are manufactured with a 9-pin serial port. Should your service laptop not have a 9-pin serial port there are several options available to you. These include: USB to serial converter PCMIA serial card Express Card

Should your service laptop not have a 9-pin serial port, male connection please refer to the handout titled “9-Pin Serial Connection Alternatives”. The handout includes specific information regarding each type of devise. NOTE: You must have a working serial connection PRIOR to attending VASC school.

25-Pin parallel port or USB port This port is needed for Ruby Manager. Ruby Manager will be used as a backup and restore utility. Ruby Manager uses a HASP key. If the HASP key is not connected to your laptop you will not be able to access the program. The HASP key can be ordered either as a 25-pin connection or a USB connection. Mouse We suggest you have an external mouse, it will allow you to move around and work faster than using the internal mouse pad. At least 500 MB of hard drive space Ethernet Port An Ethernet port is required for specific installation and repair work. All Sapphire and Topaz installations require an Ethernet Port. As a VASC technician software and documentation will be downloaded from a website. VeriFone offers training and certification testing which must be completed online. We strongly recommend for faster and more efficient downloading a cable, DSL, or wireless connection be used. Dial-up in most cases will be too slow and may be unreliable.

When completing site surveys, installations, software upgrades, and service work the following software may be required: Windows 2000, or XP The software and utilities you will use to perform VeriFone service work are compatible with Windows 2000 or XP. Please do not use Windows 2000 ME. Windows 98 may not be supported or compatible with VeriFone proprietary software. HyperTerminal This is a free utility available when purchasing and installing Microsoft Windows.

Internet Explorer, 6.0 or higher In order to complete online training, certification testing, and router configurations you will need to ensure you are using Internet Explorer, 6.0 or higher. Other browsers may not be compatible. Acrobat Reader, 6.0 or higher Acrobat Reader is a free program that can be downloaded at adobe.com. This program is needed when displaying and viewing VeriFone documentation.

WinZip, 7.0 or higher WinZip is a free program that can be downloaded at WinZip.com. GemStall, v2.11 or v2.52 This is VeriFone proprietary software. GemStall is a DOS utility used when downloading software onto a Ruby terminal. GemStall can be downloaded from the VeriFone premier portal, which will be available to you after specific certification requirements have been met.

Backup/Restore Utility This is VeriFone proprietary software. This DOS utility is needed when performing installations and service work at Sapphire and Topaz locations. It will be used for backing up and restoring data. The software is available to you when you attend Topaz VASC Classroom Certification. GemCom32 This is VeriFone proprietary software. The software will be needed when performing installations and service work at Sapphire and Topaz locations. The software will be available to you when you attend Topaz VASC Classroom Certification.

Ruby Manager, v1.43 or v1.53 with HASP key This is VeriFone proprietary software and will be used to backup and restore data at Ruby locations. Your company must purchase this software and HASP key prior to attending Ruby VASC Classroom Certification. Ruby Manager Patch Patches for Ruby Manager v1.43 and v1.53 are available on VeriFone’s premier portal, which will be available to you after specific certification requirements have been met.

Anti-virus Utility Please ensure your laptop has an up-to-date version of an anti-virus utility. You will be accessing information, completing training, and certification tests using the internet. Without an up-to-date anti-virus your laptop will be exposed to virus’. Virus’ will cause your laptop to work inefficiently, improperly, or not at all.

Hardware Requirements
Module 2: VASC System Requirements When completing site surveys, installations, software upgrades, and service work the following hardware may be required: 10’ RS232 Cable This serial cable is used to connect your laptop to the POS terminal. 9-pin Female Null Modem Adapter This adaptor will be connected your laptop serial port. The RS232 cable will be connected to this adaptor which will then connect to the POS terminal. VeriFone POS Terminal(s) Ruby and/or Topaz terminals will be needed for the installation. Dispenser Interface Device In order for the fuel to be interfaced with a VeriFone POS controller a pump/dispenser interface will be required. The type of interface will be determined when completing the site survey. Fuel/DCR Communications Kit In order for the fuel and DCRs to interface with the VeriFone POS controller a communication kit will be needed. There is a specific kit for each dispenser manufacturer (Tokheim, Wayne, etc.). The type of kit will be determined when completing the site survey.

Dispenser Security Module This module is required for outside debit card transactions and will be dependant on the type of dispenser manufacturer. The type of module needed will be determined when completing the site survey. Dispenser Card Reader Interface Device This interface is required for card readers to work at the dispenser. The type of device will be determined when completing the site survey and is dependant on the type of dispenser manufacturer.

Phone Cable Purchasing an inexpensive phone and keeping it in our work van is recommended. The phone can be used to test phone line communications. HASP Key The HASP key is required when using Ruby Manager. You will need the appropriate HASP key connected to laptop/computer in order to access the program.

Small Phillips and Regular Screwdriver Needed for installs, upgrades, and service work. Chip Puller May be needed when performing software upgrades and service work. Small Pliers May be needed when performing service work. Static Strap To be used when performing service work.

The three reference guides include: Manager’s Reference Guide. This guide includes all the available files, fields, and values for the specific application. Report’s Reference Guide. This guide includes all the reports and an explanation of each report. Sales Reference Guide. This guide includes step-by-step instructions on how to complete transactions and other sales related activities. All Application Reference Guides are available on VeriFone’s premier portal.
