3 Population Census Census is a total count of every person who is in the country on the census night. Characteristics and living conditions of the people. Population size and picture of the social and living conditions of people. Only data collection exercise that covers each and every person in a country at the same time. SECRET

4 The greatest strength of the census is the provision of detailed population figures at local level mainly for: Evidence based planning, monitoring and evaluation of programs. Equity in distribution of government services. Distribution and allocation of government funds to provinces and municipalities. Planning of education and health services. Delineating of electoral districts at national and local levels. Measuring the impact of industrial development etc. The census also provides the benchmark for all household surveys conducted by Statistics South Africa. 5 First democratic census conducted in 1996 1996 Census gave a full cover of whole country as direct measurement. 2001 Census was the second full count. Large scale survey conducted in 2007 community Survey. Previous Censuses SECRET

7 Questionnaire has 75 questions. 50 Questions about individuals: -Demographics -Employment -Education 25 Questions about households: -Service delivery measures electricity, water and sanitation -Housing material and household structure or composition -The average household size. 8 Access to services and welfare: Standard Measure of living in the community. Measure of quality and profile of service delivery. Extent of the welfare support on children, disabled, old age…) Measure of infrastructure distribution (in terms of water supply, electricity, housing, schools, sanitation. 9 Demarcation of the country into 103 000 small areas for data collection with 130 households per enumeration area Map creation complete EA summary book production – complete.
