Incorporating Graphs and Diagrams
2
Use graphs and diagrams – To show readers information – To explain data – To clarify
3
Incorporating Graphs and Diagrams Make sure graph or diagram is necessary – Is it labeled? – Is it clearly displayed? – Will it answer readers’ questions? – Is it effective?
4
Incorporating Graphs and Diagrams Graph or diagram should appear close to the discussion point Label and identify title under the graph or diagram Provide source info in works cited or under graph or diagram if it is not your work – See style guide for proper formatting of citation
5
Types of graphs Line graph – compare various sets of data Bar graph – compare data with rectangular bars Scatter plot – show how one variable is affected by another Organizational chart – show relationship between different positions and ranks
6
Types of graphs Cosmograph – show comparisons that are not numerical Flow chart –break data into smaller steps for clearer look at overall process Pictograph – compare info with small picture symbols Pie chart – show data comparison with split circle
7
Circle graph After surveying the neighborhood, many dog owners reported to having owned Bull dogs (see fig. 1). This is a surprising finding since they are considered dangerous animals. Poodles, a smaller dog, are next in line. Figure 1. Dog owners
8
Diagrams Use a diagram to show relationship between parts of a whole. Parts of a plant Water cycle Recycling paper Parts of an ant Dissecting a frog Fig. 1. Frog dissection, from Jonathan McIntosh (2004).
