Floods Occur when a river overflows its channel.
Levees are long ridges that build up along the river’s edge. Can be natural or man-made. Man-made levees prevent the natural widening of the river. Why do cities use levees?

Food for Thought A young girl in Southern New York released her own “message in a bottle” with her address in a local stream. Five years later she received a note from a local beach comber saying he found her note on shore along the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. How did this happen?

How do river systems and watersheds play a part in the water cycle? Why are scientists concerned about runoff? What can increase / decrease runoff? During what seasons would runoff be increased?
