2. DID YOU KNOW? The Battle of Brooklyn could be consider the first battle in United States history. (It was fought right after the signing of the declaration of independence) It is also known as the Battle of Long Island, although happened on Brooklyn grounds It had a huge significance on the American Revolution, even though we lost the battle George Washington saved many men after this battle by leading the troops to safety in Manhattan. He was the last to leave.

3. Our Unit Description When learning about the Revolutionary War, the Battle of Brooklyn is often left out of the curriculum because the United States lost this battle to the British. However, we want our students to learn about the first battle in United States history (the Battle of Brooklyn was fought only weeks after the Declaration of Independence was signed). The Battle of Brooklyn is the largest battle in the Revolutionary War and was actually a victory in disguise for the Americans. After the Americans retreated and the British occupied the city, it became their worst enemy. The British settled in Brooklyn and got too comfortable, neglecting to send enough men and ships out to help win the rest of the battles. The Battle of Brooklyn does not only touch upon the settlement of Brooklyn, but it also plays a huge role in the entire Revolutionary War itself.

5. Family Involvement 1. Chaperoning Field Trips Parents/Guardians will accompany students to the Battle of Brooklyn site. They will help students connect what they are seeing and learning on the field trip to what they are learning in the classroom. They will also photograph what they see se that the pictures could be added to the wall sized classroom map. Parents/Guardians can also help the teacher with management. 2. Having a Parent/Guardian be an audience member A parent/guardian who is willing to bring in their personal video camera will come in to act assist students in their job as videographers for an in-class play about JP Martin. All parents will be invited to come in and serve as audience members for the students’ play. Having the parents/guardians there will serve as motivation for the students. 4. Having a Parent/Guardian help build a wall sized Battle of Brooklyn Map A parent/guardian with access to a printing center will assist the teacher in building a wall sized classroom map of the Battle of Brooklyn. The map will probably require large sized paper, so it would be good to have a parent bring this information to a printing center. 5. Parents/Guardians will assist in a publishing party Parents/Guardians will help the students create an end of the unit celebration highlighting everything they have worked on so far. Parents can come in and video tape the celebration. They can also come in to help in the decorating process. Parents/Guardians can also bring in food for the publishing party celebration.

6. 1.Fort Lee Historical Park Students will participate in an extensive program that provides the experience of living in an 18th Century Military Camp. This program lasts 5 hours and includes, a film on Fort Lee, guided tour of the Visitors' Center, candle-making and casting mini-balls, setting up camp, cooking (and eating) an 18th century meal, military drills, tour of gun batteries, musketry demonstration, and many other activities that, combined, impart a thorough understanding of life in Revolutionary times. 2.Brooklyn Historical Society In an effort to connect what they’ve been doing to the community around them, students will be sending videos of the student created JP Martin plays to the Brooklyn Historical Society. 3.Battle of Brooklyn Historical Site (Park Slope/ Greenwood cemetery) Using a copy of Copy of Barnett Schecter’s walking tour; students will be visiting the actual site of the Battle of Brooklyn. In current day Brooklyn, the Battle of Brooklyn site is present day Park Slop and Greenwood Cemetery. 4.Old Stone House The Old stone house offers an interactive center where the students can learn even more about the Battle of Brooklyn. The exhibit features period weapons and clothes, as well as documents and artifacts that bring the Battle to life. Community Involvement
