First battle Although the minutemen were defeated, they showed that they were willing and able to fight. Known as “THE SHOT HEARD ‘ROUND THE WORLD”

First battle in North Carolina Fought between NC loyalists and patriots Patriot forces were led by Richard Caswell, who would later become the first governor of the independent state of NC The victory encouraged the colony to declare independence. Prevented the British from attacking in the South until later in the war.

Known as the “TURNING POINT” of the war, this patriot victory would cause France and Spain to declare war against Britain. They brought much needed supplies, troops, a strong navy, and hope to the colonial cause.

British Victory Colonial General Nathaniel Greene would retreat from the battlefield. Patriot Victory Cornwallis lost ¼ of his soldiers. He would retreat to Wilmington and be defeated in his next attack at Yorktown
