1
The Atomic Theorists
2
J. J. Thomson ( ) Thomson is credited with the discovery of the electron (using the cathode ray experiment), of isotopes, and the invention of the mass spectrometer.
3
Earnest Rutherford (1871-1937)
Rutherford pioneered the “Rutherford model” of the atom, through his discovery and interpretation of Rutherford scattering in his gold foil experiment.
4
Robert Millikan ( ) American experimental physicist who won the 1923 Nobel Prize for his measurement of the charge on the electron and for his work on the photoelectric effect
5
Niels Bohr ( ) Danish physicist who made fundamental contributions to understanding atomic structure and quantum mechanics, for which he received the Nobel Prize in 1922.

Project #1 (100 pts, due 9/24): You and your group will write and perform a short play based on one of the experiments performed by the atomic Theorists; Thomson, Rutherford, Millikan, Bohr. The play should be three to six minutes long and everyone in the group should have a role.
7
Project #1 (100 pts, due 9/24): Your project should include the following elements: Props, pictures and/or other visuals of the experiment Explanation of how the experiment or theory worked Why it’s scientifically significant Background of the Scientist
8
Project #1 (100 pts, due 9/24): The Rubric
A portion of the grade for the project will be based on the input of a panel of peers who will assess both the project and the student's presentation of their project.
