A form of inflammatory bowel disease. A disease of the large intestine and colon. Is found in less than.1% of the American Population. Similar to Crohn’s Disease.

The cause of ulcerative colitis is not known. The most widely accepted theories point to a combination of factors, including: heredity, abnormalities of the immune system, infection or environmental triggers.

Bacterial Infection Parasitic Infection Persistent diarrhea containing blood or pus. Abdominal pain Viral Infection Ulcers

Reddening and inflammation of the eye Joint pains Skin lesions Sores in the mouth Fatigue Weight loss Loss of appetite

The goal is to induce remission. Drugs like Sulfasalazine, Mesalazine and Olsalazine are used. Can be cured by complete surgical removal of the large bowel or a Colectomy.
