DES 606 Watershed Modeling with HEC- HMS Diversion/Storage in HEC-HMS
2
Diversions Diversion modeling
3
Diversions Diversion (as pictured) would be an element that captures a certain fraction of discharge after stage reaches a desired height. Generally be used in HMS when the tool is being used as a quasi-hydraulic tool – Diversion will typically connect two reaches and divert flow according to some rule to another element.
4
Diversions in HEC-HMS Diversion in HEC-HMS – Provide rules in paired- data manager – Need external analysis to establish the diversion rules
5
Complicated Diversion/Storage How would one model this situation? Weir Routing Outlet Reservoir
6
Complicated Diversion/Storage Consider the external analysis required – Determine the performance in the channel Channel routing to diversion Treat short portion of the channel as a reservoir that drain into another channel – Treat the off-channel pond as a reservoir Drains to the downstream channel – Treat the diversion as a broad crested weir
7
Complicated Diversion/Storage Demonstrate the system by working an example that is an extension of Exercise 6
