5.4 Line Graphs Mme DiMarco

 Learning Goal: In today’s lesson, we wll be learning how to display data using line graphs and how to describe trends Learning Goal

 Line graph: displays data that has changed over time  Example, this line graph shows the size of the population of a country over time What is a line graph??

 Horizontal Axes (x axis): in a line graph, the horizontal axis represents time  Vertical Axis (y axis): in a line graph, this represents the value which you wish to display Axes

 Titles  Title for horizontal axis  Title for vertical axis  Title for the graph (what does this graph show???)  Values  What values does the graph represent? Number of people? Number of years? Number of fruit? WE NEED TO KNOW  Clarity  Your graph should be easy to read!!! Neat, organized and labeled appropriately Characteristics of a Graph

 Step 1: decide which values you want to represent on the vertical and horizontal axes of your graph (remember, the horizontal axis should show time)  For example, the y axis could show the population of Canada in millions, and the x axis could show the years 1990 – 2015  Step 2: plot a point for each piece of data that you show on the graph  Step 3: draw a line connecting the points of data How to Create a Line Graph

Example

 Page 191 – 192  Questions # 1, 2, 4 and 5 Homework
