Thinking Questions Did Napoleon do more to preserve the legacy of the French Revolution or to destroy it? Although Napoleon assumed dictatorial powers, he became First Consul as well as Emperor with the enthusiasm and approval of the French people. Should this affect how we judge him in the role of "tyrant"? Must we assume that all conquerors throughout history are villains? When, if ever, can a conqueror be hero? Did Napoleon conquer others for a higher purpose, or only for his own glory? Should a leader's personal and romantic life be factored into the assessment of hero or tyrant, and if so why or why not?

Introduction(10 minutes) Background: Napoleon Bonaparte was born in Corsica and, at an early age, saw the Corsicans defeated by the French. He was then sent to France to attend military school, and had to learn the French language. He went on to have a successful military career. In 1806, he crowned himself Emperor of France, and his wife, Josephine, Empress. Over the next 9 years, Napoleon conquered most of Europe until finally being defeated at the Battle of Waterloo. He lived his remaining years in exile on St. Helena.
