Chapter 12.2 Chemical Calculations
2
Writing and Using Mole Ratios
In chemical calculations, mole ratios are used to convert between moles of reactants and moles of product, between moles of reactants, or between moles of products. For mole-mole calculations, the coefficients in a balanced chemical equation are used to derive the mole ratios.
3
For mass-mass calculations, the molar masses are used to convert from moles to grams of any reactant or product
4
Other Stoichiometric Calculations
From the mole ratios in a balanced chemical equation, it is possible to calculate any measurement unit that is related to the mole (see mole roadmap).
5
In a given stoichiometric problem, the given quantity is first converted to moles. Then the mole ratio from the balanced equation is used to calculate the number of moles of the wanted substance. Finally, the moles are converted to any other unit of measurement related to the unit mole, as the problem requires. Practice makes perfect!!!
