This slideshow has numerous ideas that can be easily implemented in the classroom. Many websites/strategies are cited in the following slides. Appointment/Clock Buddies Give students buddies and instruct them to “find their 12:00”, assign a specific task, questions or reflection to discuss during their appointment. Judith Langer – Four Principles for An Engaging Classroom 1.Social interaction 2.Questions invite students to reflect and move ahead 3.Students look ahead at new ideas they can develop, the activity pushes them toward new learning 4.Variety of activities

The Golden Rules for Engaging Students 1.Make it meaningful – highlight the value of an assigned activity in personally relevant ways 2.Foster a sense of efficacy to foster learning – We want the task to be slightly beyond the level of proficiency, use peer modeling and include feedback to help students progress. 3.Provide autonomy / support – This is implemented by welcoming students opinions and ideas into the flow of activities, using informational language and give students the time they need for activities. 4.Establish positive teacher/student relationships 5.Promote mastery orientations to look at active participation, recognizing individual progress and student improvement and rewarding effort 6.Embrace collaborative learning by looking for ways to make the group work more productively, foster individualism by assigning different roles and evaluate student/group performance

Ideas for Deeper Understanding & Engagement Inner/outer circle with Google Hangout www.teachingchannel.org www.teachingchannel.org Collaborative Learning Think Time & Collaborative Learning – www.teachingchannel.org/videos/independent-&-group-work (give time to reason/think before you turn to talk/discuss your thinkingwww.teachingchannel.org/videos/independent-&-group-work 1-3-6 Protocol https://wiggio.com/#tpl=home_0 https://titanpad.com/– like google docs; edit together and no sign up Snowball groups/Pyramids - This method involves progressive doubling: students first work alone, then in pairs, then in fours, and so on. In most cases, after working in fours, students come together for a planning session in which their conclusions or solutions are pooled.
