Essential Question How do the functions of the human body systems interact? Today I will learn about the Skeletal System because it is responsible for protection, storage, and blood cell formation.

Activator With your neighbor, answer the following questions: 1. What disorder does this individual have? 2. What type of complications might he encounter? 3. How do these complications affect his daily life?

Scoliosis: Scoliosis. A person with scoliosis has a sideways curve to their spine. The curve is often S-shaped or C-shaped Symptoms of scoliosis may include having: Uneven shoulder blades with one being higher than the other An uneven waist or hip Leaning toward one side

Two Kinds of Bone Tissue
Compact Bone- no visible spaces; contains blood vessels Spongy Bone- open spaces; provides strength and support

Marrow-Soft tissue Two Types:
Red Marrow-produces red and white blood cells Yellow Marrow-stores fat

Essential Players of skeletal System
Cartilage- flexible tissue that is found in the ear and nose. Ligament- strong elastic bands of connective tissue

Joint-a place where two or more bones meet
3 Types of Joints: Gliding joint-ex. fingers Ball-and-Socket-ex. shoulder Hinge Joint- ex. knee

Skeletal System Injuries
Osteoporosis-a disease that results in a decrease in bone mineral density. This can increase the risk of bone fractures. Torn ACL- anterior cruciate ligament that is located in the knee. This is usually a sports related injury.
