6 One Common Voice - One Plan Comprehensive Needs Assessment In Michigan, all schools must complete one of these four School Process Profile options: School Process Rubrics (90) or EdYES! Subset (40) or Standards Assessment Report (SAR) or Self Assessment (SA) MDE NCA

11 One Common Voice - One Plan Study: Analyze Data School Data Analysis A comprehensive needs assessment includes an analysis of the correlation between achievement/outcome data with demographic data. School Data Profile Study the Achievement, Demographic, Process, & Perception Data School Data Analysis Identify Strengths and Challenges Summarize Content Area Goals Study the School Data Profile

12 One Common Voice - One Plan Study: Analyze Data School Data Analysis Look at intersecting data - for example, the relationship between achievement and demographic data. What are the conclusions regarding strengths and challenges of student learning needs? What content area goals will be addressed in the School Improvement Plan? What are the gaps between current student achievement and where the school would like it to be? What are the leading causes for the gaps in performance? Study the School Data Profile

13 One Common Voice - One Plan Study: Analyze Data School Data Analysis Example: The relationship between demographic and perception data Is there a gender difference in students’ perceptions of the learning environment? (Perception Data) Study the School Data Profile

14 Example: The relationship between demographic and process data Are there specific students that spend more days or fewer days in suspension than others? (Process Data) One Common Voice - One Plan Study: Analyze Data School Data Analysis Study the School Data Profile

15 One Common Voice - One Plan Study: Analyze Data School Process Analysis Remember, important process data resides in the Comprehensive Needs Assessment! School Process Profile o (School Process Rubrics (90), EdYES! Subset, SAR, SA) School Process Analysis Study the School Process Profile

16 The Michigan Comprehensive Needs Assessment (CNA)* includes these same components… 1.School Data Profile 2.School Data Analysis 3.School Process Profile 4.School Process Analysis 5.Summary Report *Comprehensive needs assessments may vary. However, in Michigan, the School Process Profile must include one of four designated options. One Common Voice - One Plan Creating a Common Vocabulary for School Improvement Common Vocabulary

17 One Common Voice - One Plan Study: Analyze Data School Summary Report What are the challenges identified in your comprehensive needs assessment (including the School Data Analysis and the School Process Analysis)? What are the root causes for the gaps? Greatest needs Greatest challenges Additional information or data Study the School Summary

18 Root Cause Questions: Would the problem have occurred if the cause had not been present? Will the problem reoccur if the cause is corrected? What data are indicating there is a problem or problems? What other indicators are there that might be related, using another piece of data? Bernhardt, Victoria (2002). The School Portfolio Toolkit. Larchmont, NY, Eye on Education. One Common Voice - One Plan Study: Analyze Data School Summary Report

20 One Common Voice - One Plan Study: Set Goals After analyzing the School Summary Report of the Comprehensive Needs Assessment, the School Improvement Team (SIT), working collaboratively, will identify areas of success to celebrate and decide which areas require attention (challenges). The challenges will be organized and grouped into themes and refined into the school’s achievement goals to help guide the school toward its desired future.

21 One Common Voice - One Plan Study: Set Goals Based on your building level data, are there district goals that need to be incorporated into the building’s and/or district’s school improvement plan/strategic plan? Are the building goals and the district goals aligned and supportive of each other? Think Systemically

22 Set your school improvement goals based on your data. Schools are required to write a goal for any area for which they do not meet AYP and/or are not performing at the state average on state assessments. Maintenance goals are appropriate for areas in which the school is performing at a satisfactory level and are focused on maintaining or improving student performance in that content area. (MDE) Set your measurable objective statement to support your school improvement goal. One Common Voice - One Plan Study: Set Goals

23 One Common Voice - One Plan Study: Set Goals School Improvement Template Vocabulary Goal Statement Measurable Objective Statement Strategy Statement Action Steps/Activity

24 Goal Statements (Student focused) Linked to identified student academic learning needs State broadly the area of focus and that all students will become successful learners Based on a careful analysis of data Align with the challenges identified in the Comprehensive Needs Assessment Define the priority area for an improvement plan Choose three to five goal statements. (English Language Arts and/or Math goals are required by NCLB if a school has been identified for improvement based on Adequate Yearly Progress.) Moving from challenges to goals! One Common Voice - One Plan Study: Set Goals

25 One Common Voice - One Plan Study: Set Goals and Measurable Objectives Measurable Objective Statement (Student Focused) Linked to the goal Identifies the knowledge, skills, outcomes, and results that are measurable, observable, and quantifiable Also referred to as SMART goals States: Who will be able to do what, by when, as measured by what? Should consider research around this content area to ensure alignment with research findings

26 One Common Voice - One Plan Study: Set Measurable Objectives  Specific  Measurable  Attainable  Realistic  Time-bound SMART Objective

27 Student Goal Statement example: All students will improve their reading skills across the curriculum schoolwide. Measurable Objective Statement examples: All students will increase skills in the area of informational reading so that the percentage of non-disabled students proficient on the MEAP increases from 56% to 65% and the percentage of students with disabilities proficient on the MEAP increases from 35% - 52% by the end of the next school year (2009-2010). *Be sure to consider all data sources as you determine your goals and your measurable objectives. 30 30 1.What do our students need to know and be able to do? 2. How will we know if our students are meeting the standards? 3. What will we do differently if students are not meeting the standards? 4. What will our teachers do differently to achieve the goal? One Common Voice - One Plan Study: Research Best Practices

31 As a building, establish procedures to utilize the best available research-based practices and strategies to improve student learning. This enables you to select the practices that will have the most impact on student achievement as you move forward with your School Improvement Plan. When the school culture relies on research throughout the school improvement process, the school building’s team should be able to set the measurable objectives and select the strategies that will be most effective for its students. * Remember, the School Improvement Framework is based on current research and should be used to guide your strategy statements and action steps. One Common Voice - One Plan Study: Research Best Practices

32 One Common Voice - One Plan Study: Research Best Practices Align your strategies to the School Improvement Framework*! *The School Improvement Framework is based on research. Your Comprehensive Needs Assessment will point you to areas that need attention and will help you to determine strategies for each of your goal areas and/or professional development needs!

33 One Common Voice - One Plan School Improvement Framework

34 Critical Questions About Research In what context was the practice effective? How is this context same/different from our context? How will the differences render the practice less/not effective? How would the practice need to be modified for our use? Will the modified practice still be effective? With what probability? Why do we believe this? One Common Voice - One Plan
