History  A true story  Takes place in 1971 in Virginia, USA  The coach of the team was an important public figure and could be fired if the team performed poorly  Therefore they were under immense pressure to perform well  In 1971 the school board in the city decided to integrate the schools to include both black and white students.

3. Herman Boone  The new African-American coach of the Titans played by Denzel Washington  He is noted for making his team practice rigorously for long hours  He was not eligible for a job in North Carolina because of his race.

4. Battle of Gettysburg  The football team visits this site during the film  A battle that was fought during the American Civil War  The end of the war resulted in the emancipation (freeing) of slaves
