1 John 2:15-17 (NKJV) Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. [16] For all that is in the world-- the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life--is not of the Father but is of the world. [17] And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever. Do not love the world or the things in the world. Don McClain 2 W. 65th St. church of Christ / March 29, 2009

Don McClain W. 65th St. church of Christ / March 29, 2009 11 Does popular dancing arouse the lusts of the flesh, and therefore qualify as lewdness?  Moving in Rhythm To The Music  Romantic or Sensually Stimulating Atmosphere: Lights, Music, Alcohol, etc.  Close Bodily Contact and/or Sensual Bodily Movements.

Don McClain W. 65th St. church of Christ / March 29, 2009 12 "The popular teen-age dances of the mid 20th century have no set steps; the dancers respond spontaneously to the beat of the musicians. The degree of satisfaction attained by young people 'twisting' or 'shaking' to the blare of amplified music in dance halls, further enlivened by psychedelic lighting, is different from the pleasure derived by their elders waltzing to the 'Blue Danube'...

Don McClain W. 65th St. church of Christ / March 29, 2009 13 “... but it is only a difference of age and time. Fundamentally, both age groups are enjoying the pleasure of dancing in their own way...The end product is doubtless the same - physical pleasure in the activity of dancing and sexual awareness of a partner, whether embraced or half-consciously observed." -

Don McClain W. 65th St. church of Christ / March 29, 2009 14  Dance We Must (1938, reprinted 1950), p. 6 - "Another motive for the dance is the sexual motive - the dance has always been used as a means of expressing sexual desire and as a means of wooing...We find this same sex motive in the modern ballroom dance, which has now degenerated into dull and stupid forms, but it is a legitimate opportunity for contact.”

Don McClain W. 65th St. church of Christ / March 29, 2009 15  Prof. W. C. Wilkerson of Chicago University: it is a “system of means, contrived with more than human ingenuity, to excite the instinct of sex action.”  Collier's Encyclopedia, "Dance", Vol. 7, p. 683 (1964 edition) "...The social dance has usually been the result of joint physical exuberance and sex stimuli...“

Don McClain W. 65th St. church of Christ / March 29, 2009 16  Homer Hailey: “It is true that only a minority of church members dance, and possibly a small minority; but to whatever degree dancing is tolerated among members of the body, to just that degree the church tends toward the world, and allows the spirit of the world to infiltrate it.”

Don McClain W. 65th St. church of Christ / March 29, 2009 17 Common Sense:  What if you walked into a place where people were dancing and men were dancing with men and women with women – what kind of place would you think you had walked into?  How can we deny that people of the opposite sex dancing together is an expression of heterosexual activity?

Don McClain 18 W. 65th St. church of Christ / March 29, 2009 2 Timothy 2:19-22 (NKJV) 19... "Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity."... 22 Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

Don McClain 19 W. 65th St. church of Christ / March 29, 2009 1 Thes 4:3-5 (NKJV) 3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality; 4 that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, 5 not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God;

Don McClain 20 W. 65th St. church of Christ / March 29, 2009 Romans 13:12-14 (NKJV) 12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. 13 Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.

Don McClain 21 W. 65th St. church of Christ / March 29, 2009 1 Corinthians 6:18 (NKJV) 18 Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body.

Don McClain W. 65th St. church of Christ / March 29, 2009 22 Shall we dance?  It is wrong to lust in our hearts after others - Mt 5:28  It is wrong to conduct ourselves in any way as to excite the lusts in others – Mat. 18:7; Rom. 14:13  Lasciviousness is a sin, which is condemned as a work of the flesh and will keep one out of heaven - Gal 5:19-21
