DEBRIEFThinking Like a Historian The effect of the aftermath of the Suez Crisis caused the beginning of the end of France and Britain’s empires because of the embarrassment of being defeated. This represents how the Suez Crisis affected the long term outcome for France and Britain. The Suez Canal was very important for trade, especially for Britain. The main cause of the crisis was America and Britain went back on their promise to pay for the dam that Egypt wanted in the Suez Canal. We, the US, didn’t want to get involved because we were angry with Britain/France for invading Egypt and it could get out of control quickly.
