1 Measures Of Central Tendency
The mean, or average, of a set of values is the sum of all of the values divided by the number of values there are. The median is the middle number when the values are written in order. The mode is the value that occurs most often. *There can be no mode, one mode, or more than one mode.

2 Associated Words To Know
The minimum, or lower extreme, is the lowest value. The maximum, or upper extreme, is the highest value. The range is the difference between the maximum and the minimum. It lets you know how spread out the values are. An outlier is a value that is unusually spread apart from the other values in the set.

3 Example Find the mean, median, mode, and range of the set: 3, 5, 8, 5, 8, 7, 16, 10, 2, 7, 1, 5, 6, 1

4 Which Measure of Central Tendency is best to use?
The mean is used the most because it takes every number into account. It is best to use for sets with no outliers. The median is a good choice to represent a set with one or two outliers. The mode is only useful for sets of data that have many identical values.

5 Example Find the mean, median, and mode for the set of data and name the measure that best describes the data. 1, 1, 2, 3, 4, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12 1, 1, 2, 3, 4, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 51, 53 3) 22, 25, 28, 28, 31, 34
