1
Mean, Median, Mode, and Range Nate Basalyga
2
Mean The mean is the average of your group set of numbers When finding the mean, you add up each number in the group, then divide by the amount of numbers you have added The end result will be your mean
3
Mean Ex: (10, 12, 15, 8, 17, 21, 14, 11) 10 + 12 + 15+ 8 + 17 + 21 + 14 + 11 = 108 108 / 8 = 13.5
4
Mean Ex: (22, 24, 28, 23, 25, 25, 24, 22) ( 22 + 24 + 28 + 23 + 25 + 25 + 24 + 22) = 171 193/8 = 24.125 24.125
5
Median The median is the number that divides the higher set from the lower set The median is commonly know as the “middle” number Often times the median and mean are close, but they can be very different
6
Median (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 16, 18, 20) The median of the set is “13” The number 13 divides the set in half
7
Median (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) The median of the set is “5” “5” divides the given set in half
8
Mode In the given set, the mode is the number that shows up most frequently The mode will be the number that occurs most often in the set Remember the words Mode and Most. The mode is the number that shows up the most
9
Mode ( 1, 2, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 8, 9) The mode of the given set would be “4” because it shows up most frequently
10
Mode ( 10, 12, 14, 14, 14, 14, 16, 16, 16, 18, 18, 20) The Mode of the given set would be “14” because it occurs the most
11
Range When finding the range, you take the largest number of the set and subtract it by the smallest number in the set.
12
Range (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 7, 8, 9) 9 – 2 = 7 The range of the given set is 7
13
Range ( 8, 10, 11, 14, 15, 19, 21, 28, 32) 32 – 8 = 24 The range for the given set would be “24”
