Qualitative Data – Qualitative Data deals with descriptions. It is data that can be observed, but not measured. Colors, textures, smells, tastes, appearance, beauty, etc. Qualitative → Quality

Qualitative Data: Ex: Cup of Coffee Smell Appears hot Strong taste Dark brown color

Quantitative Data Quantitative Data deals with numbers. It is data that can be measured. Length, height, area, volume, weight, speed, time, temperature, cost, ages, etc. Quantitative → Quantity

Quantitative Data: Ex: Cup of Coffee 12 ounces of latte serving temperature 150º F. serving cup 7 inches in height cost $4.95

Which data set describes a situation that could be classified as qualitative? (1) The shoe sizes of everyone in the class. (2) The ages of everyone in the class. (3) The favorite movies of everyone in the class. (4) The last test scores of everyone in the class. 1)

Craig sees an advertisement for a car in a newspaper. Which information would not be classified as quantitative? (1) The cost of the car. (2) The car’s mileage. (3) The model of the car. (4) The weight of the car. 2)

Univariate Data Data that involves only one variable Data consists of only one list. Examples : – Mean, Median, & Mode – Graphs, Histograms, Pie charts, Box-and- Whisker Plots

Bivariate Data Data that involves two variables Data consists of two lists. Examples: –Scatter Plots –Regression (Line of Best Fit), Predictions –Comparisons, Relationships, Cause & Effect

Which situation should be analyzed using bivariate data? (1) Ms. Saleem keeps a list of the amount of time her daughter spends on her social studies homework. (2) Mr. Benjamin tries to see if his students’ shoe sizes are directly related to their heights. (3) Mr. DeStefan records his customers’ best video game scores during the summer. (4) Mr. Chan keeps track of his daughter’s algebra grades for the quarter. 3)

Which situation is an example of bivariate data? (1) the number of pizzas Tanya eats during her years in high school (2) the number of times Ezra puts air in his bicycle tires during the summer (3) the number of home runs Elias hits per game and the number of hours he practices baseball (4) the number of hours Nellie studies for her mathematics tests during the first half of the school year 4)

Measures Of Central Tendency The mean, or average, of a set of numbers is the sum of all of the numbers divided by how many numbers there are. The median is the middle number when the numbers are written in order. The mode is the number that occurs most often. *There can be no mode, one mode, or more than one mode.

Associated Words To Know The minimum, or lower extreme, is the lowest value. The maximum, or upper extreme, is the highest value. The range is the difference between the maximum and the minimum. It lets you know how spread out the values are. An outlier is a value that is unusually spread apart from the other values in the set.

Example 5)Find the mean, median, mode, and range of the set: 3, 5, 8, 5, 8, 7, 16, 10, 2, 7, 1, 5, 6, 1

Which Measure of Central Tendency is best to use? The mean is best to represent sets with no outliers. The mean takes every number into account. The median is best to represent a set with outliers. The mode is usually not useful to represent a set of data.

Example Find the mean, median, and mode for the set of data and name the measure that best represents the data. 6)1, 1, 2, 3, 4, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12

7) 1, 1, 2, 3, 4, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 51, 53 Find the mean, median, and mode for the set of data and name the measure that best represents the data.

8)22, 25, 28, 28, 31, 34

13)If the scores 18, 20, 25, 11, and x have a mean of 19, what is the value of x?
