Do Now Last week I introduced 3 reasons explorers came to the America’s known as the 3 G’s. without looking back in your notes, what were the 3 G’s? Do you think the benefits and the profits of the voyages for all these explorers outweigh the dangers? Why or why not?

Do Now Complete the worksheet I have passed out. We have talked about the Columbian Exchange, and although not in the definition, one of the big changes in peoples lives is what's known as cultural diffusion. Cultural Diffusion – Spread of ideas, customs, and technology from one to another - This occurs through migration (moving), trade, or warfare

II. The Age of Exploration/Discovery - All discoveries of America were by accident - Most were looking for a faster route to China

A.Empires and People 1. Portugal  Prince Henry the Navigator – Set up a navigation school - The Portuguese are the first to build a ship that can cross an ocean

2. Spain - Will become the early powerhouse of colonization  Colony - A group of people living in a new area -The Spanish came looking for gold and silver -Will kill many Indians through disease and conquistadors  Conquistador – A Spanish Warrior

3. France -They’ll settle in Canada (Quebec) - Came looking for the Northwest passage - Don’t find it, and some stay and become fur (animal) traders

4. England - Will get a slow start to colonization - Eventually will control most of North America  Will defeat the Spanish Armada (large Spanish naval fleet) - Becomes a turning point for colonization
