Computer Components The five main computer components are:
Central Processing Unit (CPU) Monitor Keyboard Mouse Printer

Central Processing Unit (CPU)
“Brains” of the computer that contain computer chips and circuits that control and manipulate data to produce information.

Monitor A piece of hardware that enables you to see the operations performed by your CPU

Keyboard A hardware device that contains keys from which you enter commands, characters, and other computer operations.

Mouse A device that allows the user to interact with the computer through hand movements and buttons.

Laser Printer A type of printer that writes images onto paper using a laser beam, similar to the mechanism used for a copy machine. Generally, laser printers provide the highest quality images available from a desktop printer.

Local Area Network (LAN)
An arrangement by which personal computers are connected so that users of each one can share printers, files, communication resources, and other services.

Server A shared network computer that provides users access to files and devices in the network.

Programs or Software Instructions given to a computer.

System Software Programs that run the computer’s internal operations. These programs are called the operating system. We use the Windows 7 operating system

Application Software Programs that perform tasks for the computer users. Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are examples of application software.

Graphical User Interface (GUI)
The user interacts with the system visually, by selecting icons from the screen, as opposed to lengthy commands.

Icon A small picture that represents a file, a program, or a command.

Taskbar Shows buttons for the applications you’ve opened. To switch between applications you’ve opened, click the button(s) on the Taskbar - located next to start button – multi-tasking.

Booting When the computer starts up and the operating system is automatically loaded from the hard disk.

Quick Access Toolbar Provides quick access to frequently used commands. You can easily customize the toolbar to contain commands and macros that you use frequently.

Word/Text Wrap Text is inserted into your document at the insertion point. When you begin to enter text, the cursor moves to the right in front of each new letter. When the insertion reaches the right margin it automatically moves to the next line.

Dialogue Box Presents information about the current settings for a command and allows you to change them, if necessary.

Minimize, Close, and Restore Buttons
Found on the top, right-hand corner of every window. The Maximize button expands the window to fill the screen; the Minimize button reduces the window to an icon on the Taskbar; and the Restore button returns the window to its original state

Keys/Key Combinations

Backspace Key Deletes the character to the left of the cursor, highlighted text, or objects.

Caps Lock Key Formats all letters so that they appear in upper case.

Control + End Moves the cursor to the end of the document, in one operation.

Control + Home Moves the cursor to the beginning of the line, in one operation.

Delete Key Deletes the character to the right of the cursor, highlighted text, or objects.

Enter Key Creates new lines and paragraphs.

Shift Key Performs upper case functions and creates capital letters.
