John Dalton By: Cassie Long and Qyaira Colbert

2 Early Life: Born September 6, 1766 in Eaglesfield, England. Was color blind, along with his brother Started teaching at a Quaker school in Cumberland when he was 12. During his early career as a scientist he studied color blindness, also know as “Daltonism”.

3 John Dalton:

4 His Ideas: Matter is composed of atoms.
Atoms are indestructible and indivisible. Atoms of a given element are identical in size, mass, and chemical properties.

5 His Ideas Continued: Atoms of a specific element are different from a different element. Different atoms combine in simple whole number ratios to form compounds. Chemical reaction- atoms are separated, combined, or rearranged.

6 Models:

7 Dalton’s Law of Partial Pressures:
Total pressure of a mixture of gases is equal to the sum of the pressures of all the gases in the mixture.

8 His Books: Meteorological Findings A New System of Chemical Philosophy
Dalton and the Contribution of Self-Observation to Scientific Discovery: An Account of Colour Blindness

9 Accomplishments: The president of the Manchester Literary and Philosophical society. Accepted an honorary Doctorate of Science degree from Oxford University. Offered another degree, a Doctorate of Laws by Edinburgh University.

10 His Contributions to Science/Chemistry:
His research not only changed chemistry, but also initiated its advancement into modern science. The splitting of the atom could not have happen if he hadn’t researched the atomic makeup of simple and compound molecules. Allowed for cost-efficient manufacturing of chemical compounds.

11 Later Life: Suffered a second stroke.
Continued to teach at universities throughout the Untied Kingdom. Lived an uncomplicated life focused on science. Had a stroke in 1837. Suffered a second stroke. Died July 26, 1844 at his home in Manchester, England. 40,000 people attended the procession, honoring him and his accomplishments.
