Advanced Placement Language & Composition What To Expect

Argumentation and Non-Fiction Civic Speech Rhetoric – Use of language and other elements to persuade others to act in a desired way Politics, advertising Rational argument and emotional manipulation You MUST be able to think for yourself – Knowledge and confidence

What is the Exam like? It is a timed test. 3 hours. Yup. You read it right. THREE HOURS That’s like… – 3 episodes of “The Walking Dead” – 6 episodes of “Key & Peele” – Except those are fun and don’t involve real brain power (although you might look like you belong in “The Walking Dead” after the exam is over…)

What is the Exam Like? 1 Hour: Multiple Choice – 4-6 passages – 55 questions You will need roughly 60% correct in order to receive a passing score – 45% of total exam score (out of 100) Short Break – Approximately 15 minutes

What is the Exam Like? 2 hours: Essays – 3 essays (40 minutes each) Scored on a 1-9 scale (1 is low, 9 is high… obviously) 27 total possible points – 55% of total exam score

How is the Exam Graded? Graded on a Bell Curve; 1 to 5 – 1 and 2: Failing – 3, 4, 5: Passing It is challenging – The test is on your ability to read, write, and think – College Board tries to test students on materials they have not already been exposed to.

How is the Exam Graded? Graded by human beings who want to see you do well – “Looking to Like” – Your BEST strategy is to write in your own actual voice Having thought about something and having something intelligent to say about it
