5 Paradox Contradictions that make sense are a literary device called paradox. Shakespeare uses paradox to convey:  character’s conflict  and the dual nature of some of the situations in which they find themselves.

6 Examples of Paradoxical Language Juliet: Act I.v.136-139 What truth do these paradoxes (contradictions) convey? “My grave is like to be my wedding bed” “My only love, sprung from my only hate!” What ideas about theme and future plot developments can we infer from these paradoxes?
