Design Brief This is your opening statement of what you plan to do and what type of light you will be designing and making. First write an outline of the type of light you have chosen and why? Then write a detailed response to each of the five W’s WHO – Who will use the product? Think about the potential customer WHERE – Where will the product be used? Think about the location (indoors, outside, on a wall, etc) WHY – Why is the product needed? Think about what problem the product is solving? WHAT – What precisely does the product have to do? Go into great detail for this question WHEN – When will the product be used? Think about if there are particular times the product will be used

Relevant Light Comparison
Research a range of lights that interest you for your design. Then produce a write up to show how well you can analyse the products and consider what aspects you could incorporate into your design. This must contain: Between 4 and 6 images of lights What they have in common (materials, size, features, etc)? Your thoughts on how successful they are? What ideas have they given you for your own design?

Old vs New Product Analysis
Comparison exercise between an older light and a more modern one using the headings below. The focus is on how design has changed over time, how well they meet their users needs, and how they are manufactured. Aesthetics Trends (fashion) Colours used and why Component proportions Function Ergonomics Construction and materials Own opinion (good and bad) User needs and wants The underlined one’s are the most important. To finish, what things you would be likely to include in your design, why? Also how well do the examples meet your design brief?

Relevant Dimensions Produce a sheet which presents any size information that might be relevant when designing your product. Consider the size of any light fittings, wires, power supplies, battery packs. Annotations should be included. LEDs 5mm in Diameter Available in chains of 20 LEDs with a 100mm wire between each light Batter pack measures 75mm length, 55mm width, 20mm depth.

Analysis of Research Produce a mind map showing what you have found from your research makes a successful light. Be specific about the type of light you are making. What are the common features of a good light? What makes a light Product successful? Think about: Materials Style Features Ergonomics Fit for purpose Suitability for user

Specification Write a detailed specification that outlines what you plan to make and reflects the research completed – use the following headings: Function – What is the function? Ergonomics and anthropometrics – How will it be made easy to use/operate? Safety – Any safety features/requirements? Aesthetics – How will it look (style)? Materials – What will you use? Environment – Where will it be used? User group – Who will it be aimed at? Life expectancy – How long should it last? Can batteries be changed? Costing – Is there a budget? How much would the user pay?

Initial Designs Start with around 6 ideas and annotate with reference to: Features of an idea that look promising Features that could be a problem and need development Sizes Materials that could be used Methods of construction that could be used Finishes that could be used

Development of Designs
Opportunity for you to test possible solutions before making decisions. You could: Develop your design through more detailed drawings (2D/3D, hand drawn, CAD) Test a process or construction method and record how success it was and if you will use it Make a card/wood/paper model of the design, or part of the design and record photographs of it explaining how you will develop the design further By the end of this section you must have developed your design and be ready to produce a final drawing.

Final Design Produce a neat final design drawing which shows:
The shape of each component to be made The size of each component to be made The materials to be used for each component Details of the finishes to be used Details of any pre-manufactured components Details of the methods and processes used to assemble the product

Plan of Making Produce a detailed step-by-step plan of how you are going to make your product. Include details of: What you will do? What tools/equipment you will use? What safety precautions you will take?

Present photographs of you making your product in order. Annotate the photographs to explain the processes. You need to also explain any technical problems you encountered and how you solved them?

Overall Reflection Write an overall reflection on how you feel the project has gone as a whole. - What things were successful? - How well did you use your time during the whole project? - Did you select the most appropriate materials for making your design? - Did you select the most appropriate construction methods for making your design? - Did you select the most appropriate finishes for making your design? - And any major things that you would do differently if you did it again?
