Catalyst (Do NOT do this on your weekly sheet!!) What is your goal for the rest of this year? What would be the best job or other thing that you could have in the next 10 years of your life? …Is chemistry important
3
Well, do you like money? Average Salaries and Education
4
Why care about chemistry? (TPS) 1.So you can graduate. ($$$) 2.If you’re going to college, you’ll probably take chem there. Make it easy! ($$$) 3.Develop your brain. 4.Develop organization and study skills. 5.Understand the universe!

Some data Student AStudent B Late to class once per week or less Late to class 3 or more days per week 50/50 weekly point sheet grade 28/50 point sheet grade Asks questions when he/she doesn’t get it Doesn’t pay attention, answers “I don’t know” Takes notes needed to understand Takes some notes or no notes Organized binderNo notebook
7
Some data Student AStudent B Never talks out of turn, helps neighbor understand Talks out of turn, disturbs neighbor’s learning Works hard to understand the concepts during class work Copies answers to class work or guesses at the answers Who do you think did better on the test?
8
Now… 1.Decide on one of these actions that will be import to help you succeed. 2.Write a sentence or two about how today’s objective will help you achieve your life goals. Student AStudent B A on testF on test

KP#1: A chemical equation shows which compounds and elements are in a chemical reaction. NaNO 3(aq) + KCl (aq) NaCl (aq) + KNO 3(aq) ReactantsProducts Reaction Occurs Phase And
10
Today, we will classify 5 different types of reactions. 1.Synthesis 2.Decomposition 3.Single Replacement 4.Double Replacement 5.Combustion The next 5 slides are like a big key point #2.
11
Type #1: Synthesis Two reactants combine to form one product. A + B -> AB Examples: – Fe (s) + O 2(g) FeO (s) – 2Li + Br 2 2LiBr
12
Type #2: Decomposition One reactant splits into two or more products AB -> A + B Examples: – 2PbSO 4 2PbSO 3 + O 2 – 2H 2 O 2H 2 + O 2
13
Type #3: Single Replacement A single element replaces another element in a compound A + BX -> AX + B Examples: – 3Mg + 2AlCl 3 3MgCl 2 + 2Al – MgBr 2 + Cl 2 MgCl 2 + Br 2
14
Type #4: Double Replacement AB + CD -> AD + CB The cations and anions from two compounds switch partners. Examples: – NaNO 3(aq) + KCl (aq) NaCl (aq) + KNO 3(aq) – NaBr + H 3 PO 4 Na 3 PO 4 + HBr
15
Type #5: Combustion A substance reacts with oxygen, releasing energy (Fire!) A + O 2 -> AO x C x H y + O 2 -> CO 2 + H 2 O Examples: – C + O 2 -> CO 2 (Burning Coal) – C 3 H 8 + 5O 2 -> 3CO 2 + 4H 2 O
16
Try these: 1.MgCO 3 -> MgO + CO 2 2.Pb + S 8 -> PbS 2
17
Try these: 1.MgCO 3 -> MgO + CO 2 2.Pb + S 8 -> PbS 2 1 R, 2 P means DECOMPOSITION 2 R, 1 P means SYNTHESIS
18
Try these: 1.Fe + Ag 2 SO 4 -> FeSO 4 + 2Ag 2. K 2 SO 4 + Pb(NO 3 ) 2 -> 2KNO 3 + PbSO 4 3. CH 4 + 2O 2 -> 2H 2 O + CO 2
19
Try these: 1.Fe + Ag 2 SO 4 -> FeSO 4 + 2Ag 2. K 2 SO 4 + Pb(NO 3 ) 2 -> 2KNO 3 + PbSO 4 3. CH 4 + 2O 2 -> 2H 2 O + CO 2 SINGLE REPLACEMENT DOUBLE REPLACEMENT COMBUSTION
20
Practice Time First 10 Mins: Work Silently, Independently Next 20 mins: You may collaborate – Teach and tutor for bonus points! Stay in your seat. When time is up, we will go over the answers.
21
Exit Question Classify the following reaction: a.CuCl + K → KCl + Cu b.CuCl + KF → CuF + KCl c.2H 2 + O 2 → 2H 2 O
