In Question One candidates will apply their knowledge of drama and drama processes by reading an extract from a play and: identifying and describing drama elements in the extract. In particular, candidates will be expected to be able to identify changes or beats in the text. identifying and interpreting stage directions describing and explaining the possible use of drama techniques and technologies to perform the extract.

You do this EVERYTIME you work in drama You just do it, rather than write it. You are not doing anything new. You are all very good at this!

How you can study Pick any page of script. Make sure you read the notes about the key ideas.

How you can study Identify the elements in the script 1. Identify and describe what it is the script focussing on. Is it a relationship or a problem? 2. Identify and describe the action line. What actually happens in the scene? 3. Identify and describe 2 roles. Think about status and their relationship too. How are they similar? How are they different? 4. Identify and describe the tension in this scene. What are the two factors that cause tension? 5. Identify and describe the time the scene is set in. 6. How could space be used to create the setting of the scene? The stage directions may even tell you this. 7. Identify and describe the mood of the scene. NOT the mood of one character; the mood the AUDIENCE feels. 8. Identify any symbols and describe how they are used and to what effect.

How you can study Identify the beats in the script 1. Mark the changes in beat with a double slash. 2. Identify a line in the script where the beat changes. 3. Describe the change in beat in terms of what the character used to want and what they now want 4. Explain what this change in beat suggests about this character, or their relationship. 5. Explain how this links to the overall ideas of the play; hint, look at the elements you already identified.

How you can study 1. Identify a stage direction (usually shown in italics) 2. Describe what will happen to the look of the stage when this happens. 3. Explain by linking this change to an element ie does it create focus on something? Does it show us something new about a role? Does it create a particular mood?

How you can study Choose a role in the script Pick two beats. One that changes after the other. 1. How you can study Choose a technology you could use in a moment in the script. 1. Identify the technology you would use AND the line in the script you would use it on. 2.Describe what the stage would look like/sound like before the technology change and then once it has been used. 3.Explain what the effect of the use of technology ie link it to an element does it create focus on something or someone? Does it tell us someone about a role? What tension does it create? What mood does it create? 4.Link the use of technology to the world of the play. What main idea in the play does it highlight?

In Question Two candidates will respond to and make judgements about a live theatre performance by: identifying the theatre form of the performance explaining how aspects of the performance were typical or atypical of the form describing the use of drama techniques and technologies in the performance

What this means You need to know what theatre form the performance ‘fits into’. You need to be able to identify the features of that theatre form and where they were seen in your performance You need to be able to identify, describe and make links to the effect of drama techniques and technologies You need to be able to articulate the ideas that the play was trying to show and how the use of the theatre form, techniques and technologies created these ideas.

How you can study – theatre form of the live performance Identify one of the theatre forms your ‘live theatre performance’ fits into. Identify all of the features of that theatre form in bullet points.

How you can study – theatre form Create a diagram that identifies the features of your theatre form. It should have links on it to where you saw these features in the live performance that you saw. Those links should then go to a box where you explain how all of these things you saw in your live performance created a single idea/theme in your performance.

Using Thinker’s keys to look at theatre form Identify 10 aspects of theatre that are NOT in your theatre form. What if this performance was Melodrama or Elizabethan? How would it be different? Predict what the play would be if you picked the story up 10 years later in the protagonist’s life What are all of the disadvantages of performing using the features of this theatre form? Draw a random picture. Explain how it shows the features of this theatre form as created in the live performance.

How you can study – techniques Pick a moment where an actor creates a memorable moment. Draw their body position Around it, annotate how they use any drama techniques Explain what it shows about their character Make a link to this moment in relation to the world of the play.

How you can study – technologies Pick a moment where a technology creates a memorable moment. Draw the stage and the technology use Around it, annotate what is happening Explain what the technology does to create an element ie focus, role, tension, mood Make a link to this moment in relation to the world of the play.
