Drill Scientific Notation Review: When writing a value in scientific notation, the mantissa (first number) must be between what two values? (5.0 x 10 5 )/(2.0 x 10 -14 ) = ? (3.0 x 10 12 ) 3 = ? 1/(4.0 x 10 6 ) = ? HW: Unit Conversions and Factor-Label Method WS
3
Objectives IWBAT Review Scientific Notation Explain and use significant figures for taking measurement, interpreting measurements, and calculating with measurements Use the SI Units system to correctly describe measurements 4A – get textbooks Collect safety contracts NOTE: Unit 1 Test will be 9/8-9, second half of class, after a review session
4
Agenda Drill HW Review SI Unit review Dimensional Analysis & Practice Closure/Exit Ticket
5
HW Review Let’s put the problems from Calculations Using Sig Figs up on the board Let’s discuss the Metric Scavenger Hunt
6
SI Unit Review Write the correct symbol: dekamole kiloKelvin centisecond Write the correct name: um dag ML
7
What is Dimensional Analysis? A method to convert from unit to another. For example, you measure your height in inches, but you want it in centimeters. How do you change it? 1 in = 2.54 cm
8
Another example Exchange rate: $1 = 120.17 yen 1 euro = $1.12 I have 575 euro. How many yen is that equal to?
9
Another Dimensional Analysis Problem In October 1958, Oliver Smoot (an MIT student) was used to measure the length of the Harvard Bridge. It was found to be 364.4 smoots long. 1 smoot = 67.0 in (5’7”), 1 yard = 0.9144 m How long is the bridge in meters? If it takes 8.0 minutes to walk across the bridge, what is your speed in meters per second?
10
Dimensional Analysis Practice Dimensional Analysis Practice Problems WS Unit Conversions WS English to Metric Conversion Practice WS

Closure/Exit Ticket A person weighs 152 lb. How many grams is that? 1 kg = 2.2 lb How many grams in a kilogram?
