Junior Science Classes Physics (H) Everyone AP Chemistry AP Biology AP Environmental Science Anatomy (R) Earth/Space Science (R) Environmental Science Forensics (H)
3
Naming Covalent Compounds All covalent compounds have 2 names. – First = first type of element in the symbol – Second = second type of element in the symbol Prefixes tell how many of each type of element is present
4
Naming Covalent Compounds CO 2 carbondioxide
5
Naming Covalent Compounds Steps – Write the name of the first element. – Add a prefix according to the subscript. EXCEPT: if the subscript is 1, don’t add a prefix – Write the name of the second element (change the ending to –ide) – Add a prefix according to the subscript.
6
Naming Covalent Compounds SubscriptPrefix 1mono- 2di- 3tri- 4tetra- 5penta-
7
Naming Covalent Compounds SubscriptPrefix 6hexa- 7hepta- 8octa- 9nona- 10deca-
8
EXAMPLES C 2 Cl 3 carbonchloridetridi
9
EXAMPLES CO 2 carbonoxidedi
10
EXAMPLES C O carbonoxidemon
11
EXAMPLES H 2 O hydrogenoxidedimon
12
Exceptions: Elemental Compounds Elements that exist is nature as diatomic covalent compounds Made of the same type of element Same name as the elements H-O-F-Br-I-N-Cl – H 2 O 2 F 2 Br 2 I 2 N 2 Cl 2
