Communicating Techniques and Technology December 8-9, 2015 Radio Play: Before television, the largest popular form of entertainment was the radio. Much like today, families would have their dinner and then sit around the radio waiting to hear either the news or their favorite radio program. These programs ranged from short stories about the same characters, much like a sitcom, or a full length play like a movie. Actors & Actresses-Radio shows were usually done by a small number of actors playing multiple characters. For example if you were to do the story, The Three Little Pigs, the same actor might play the Wolf, the Narrator, and Pig 1, while another actor would play both Pig 2 and Pig 3. Actors manipulated their voices for each character to accomplish this. These same actors and artists were responsible for the advertisements played within the length of the program. “Commercial Breaks” were performed by the same actors that enacted the plays! Special Effects-Along with the actors, there was a person responsible for all of the sounds created during the show. This person was called a Foley Artist. Sounds might range from something large, like the sound of the house getting blown down, or something small, like the Wolf walking to the next Pig’s house. All of the sounds created by the Foley Artist helped to make the experience of listening to the show as real as being in the story itself. The Performance-We will perform a radio play in class, according to the requirements discussed above. The play will be recorded on Garage Band and will be the responsibility of the Play’s Director. Class members will play roles, in some cases, more than one. The Foley Artist will be responsible for creating and recording the sound effects required by the play. The Director and Foley artist will “mix” the plays components together into a final product and will receive extra credit for doing so.

Communicating Techniques and Technology (CT 2) December 15, 2015 WOD-Sound Effects: An imitative sound, as of thunder or an explosion, produced artificially for theatrical purposes, as for a film, play, or radio program. Often used in the plural. WOD-Foley sound effects are sounds that synchronize on screen, and require the expertise of a Foley artist to record properly. Footsteps, the movement of hand props (e.g., a tea cup and saucer), and the rustling of cloth are common foley units.Foley artist Do Now: In two to three sentences, explain how you would create the following sound effects for use in a radio play: Footsteps--Rory’s high heels, cleats… Door closing--wet grass, d-ring binder, cabinet door The sound of fire--paper, cracking raw spaghetti, cellophane paper, twigs, candy wrapping Thunder--flashing, front of desk
