Overview of WG5 future activities Adriano Raspanti Zurich, 20-23 September 2005
2
20-23 september 2005 Zurich WG5 future plans Main contents Brief description of Future Activities Brief Description of the Main Project
3
20-23 september 2005 Zurich WG5 future plans Future Activities Define common LM problem Define common LMs problems and scores, writing and sending to COSMO web-site, a quarterly summary of verifications (also plots): this should be a “must” for every COSMO member, in order to understand the behaviour of the model on different domains Human resources 0,1 FTE per participant Members and 0,1 FTE for WG5 Coordinator (responsible for collection and summary)
4
20-23 september 2005 Zurich WG5 future plans Future Activities High resolution verification Exchange of these sets of non-GTS data, in a common format, inside the COSMO community for verification purposes Human resources 0,05 FTE – responsible Uli Damrath (DWD)
5
20-23 september 2005 Zurich WG5 future plans Future Activities Verification based on data from remote sensing Verification of precipitation using radar composite network images Human resources 0.1 FTE – E. Zala (MeteoSwiss)
6
20-23 september 2005 Zurich WG5 future plans Future Activities Additional future activities ●Validation of the Common Verification Suite package testing the SW with LMs forecasts from each COSMO Member for chosen period (creation of dedicated area for “COSMO” user at ECMWF to storage data and scores) ●Delivery of the manual user guide ●Human resources 0.5 FTE – A. Galliani (UGM)
7
20-23 september 2005 Zurich WG5 future plans Future Activities Additional future activities ●Tentative Graphic Plots standardization will be discuss in the next WG meeting ●March 2006 WG5 Workshop
8
20-23 september 2005 Zurich WG5 future plans Main project Implementation of an Extended Common Verification Suite - Conditional Verification(1) Outcome Deliver a SW package, a “library”, acting as tool to perform verification of LMs using specific criteria that have to be satisfied in carrying out the scores, in the more flexible way The package will have to be a part of the common COSMO software as the Common Conditional Verification suite
9
20-23 september 2005 Zurich WG5 future plans Main project Implementation of an Extended Common Verification Suite - Conditional Verification(2) Brief Technical description One typical approach (simpler) to CV could consist of the selection of a number of forecast products and a number “mask variables”, which would be used to define conditions for the product verification e.g. verification of T2M for grid points with zero cloud cover in model and observations only
10
20-23 september 2005 Zurich WG5 future plans Main project Implementation of an Extended Common Verification Suite - Conditional Verification(3) Brief Technical description Another more complex approach could be to define for example four classes of filter masks: time-independent masks time dependent masks concurrent to the product (T2m with snow) time dependent masks with possible time-lag to the verified product (t2m with the history of previous clouds cover) masks depending on an atmospheric situation classification
11
20-23 september 2005 Zurich WG5 future plans Main project Implementation of an Extended Common Verification Suite - Conditional Verification(4) Brief Technical description Evaluate the possibility of using ECMWF ODB (faster solution); in this case some support from WG1 is necessary to collect information about it and WG6 for implementation If negative, the DB architecture is preferred anyway (solution becomes slower)
12
20-23 september 2005 Zurich WG5 future plans Main project Implementation of an Extended Common Verification Suite - Conditional Verification(4) Minimum people per year 0.2 FTE for project leader 1.8 FTE for the developers Estimated time for the project realization 2-3 years
13
20-23 september 2005 Zurich WG5 future plans Main project Implementation of an Extended Common Verification Suite - Conditional Verification(4) People already able to contribute 0.5 FTE in testing the possibility of en expanding version of the Common Verification suite package (e.g. with some static masks/filters)
