2. The Cardiovascular System
It is the system that is responsible for pumping of blood through the entire body by the heart for;
Transport of oxygen to cells
Transport of CO2 away from cells
Transport of nutrients (glucose) to cells
Movement of immune system components (cells, antibodies)
Transport of endocrine gland secretions

3. The Cardiovascular System components.
Heart is the pump
Arteries and veins are main tubes;
Arteries Away from Heart
Veins to Heart
Diffusion site; capillaries (oxygen, CO2, glucose diffuse in or out of blood)

4. The Heart
Is a four chambers muscular organ; two atria and two ventricles
It is covered by the pericardium.
It is composed of apex, base, and two surfaces
Blood flows through the heart in one direction controlled by Valves.

5. The Heart Its apex is directed to the left side of the chest.
It is formed by the left ventricle, it lies at the left 5th intercostal space, 9 cm from middle line.
The base is formed mainly of the left atrium and a small part of right atrium.
The right atrium and ventricle contain deoxygenated blood.
The left atrium and ventricle contain oxygenated blood.

6. The Heart
The right atrium is the first part receiving deoxygenated blood from the body.
The right ventricle directed the blood to the lungs through the pulmonary trunk
The left atrium is the first part receiving oxygenated blood from the lungs.
The left ventricle directed the blood to the body through the aorta.

7. The Heart The heart contraction is controlled by;
The SA node and the AV node.
Visceral motor innervations
Sympathetic (speeds up)
Parasympathetic (slows down)

8. Great vessels attached to the heart
Aorta
Superior vena cava
Inferior vena cava
Pulmonary Trunk
Pulmonary Veins (four)

9. The Blood Vessels Their are three types of blood vessels:
Arteries (and arterioles) carry blood away from the heart
Capillaries where nutrients and gas exchange occur
Veins (and venules) carry blood toward the heart.

10. Blood circulations
Pulmonary circulation ; the flow of blood between the heart and lungs.
Systemic circulation ; the flow of blood between the heart and the cells of the body.

11. The Cardiovascular System blood circulations
Hepatic Portal circulation; blood flows from GIT to the liver via portal vein then to systemic circulation via IVC
