3 A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. Sentences begin with a capital letter. Sentences that tell something are declarative. They end with a period (.). Sentences that ask a question are interrogative. They end with a question mark (?).

4 Declarative and Interrogative Sentences Declarative Sentence: The library is full of interesting books. Interrogative Sentence:How many of these books have you read?

5 Review A declarative sentence is a statement that tells about something. It ends with a period. An interrogative sentence asks a question. It ends with a question mark.

6 Practice Decide whether the sentences are declarative or interrogative. Raise your hand if you know the answer.

7 Practice 1. Which region of the country do you like best? 2. The Northeast gets plenty of snow. 3. Is there a state that is always warm? 4. The tallest mountains are in the West.

8 Practice Read each sentence. Decide whether the sentence should end with a period (.), or a question mark (?).

9 Practice 5. Last year Al’s brother walked the Appalachian Trail 6. How long did it take him 7. He started in May and finished in October 8. Would you go on a hike like that

10 Practice Tell whether the sentence are declarative or interrogative. Raise your hand if you know the answer.

11 Practice Our family is planning a trip to the mountains. Why are you going in the winter? It’s fun when the woods are full of snow. Dad wants to take us all snowshoeing. Have you ever been on skis?

12 Change the sentence to the kind named in parenthesis.

13 Has Maria gone to Florida? (declarative) Are there alligators in Florida? (declarative) You can swim all year-round in the ocean. (interrogative) Florida oranges do make wonderful juice. (interrogative) Will she call us from the airport? (declarative)
