Introducing Unit Specifications and Unit Assessment Support Packs Design and Manufacture National 4 & 5
3
Unit Assessment Assessments can be designed to provide evidence across more than one Unit or Outcome – combined assessments Flexible and open Evidence Requirements in Units Greater range of techniques and methodologies for assessment – encouraged through Unit assessment support packages More opportunities to gather naturally occurring evidence – assessment as part of learning and teaching Central and Visiting Verification by SQA

Key points: Design and Manufacture Hierarchical Unit structure that provides progression from National 4 to Advanced Higher National 3: Design and Technology Units can be delivered in any order (or mixed) Course Assessment N4Added Value Unit Set byMarked byVerified by Centre SQA N5Assignment – 90 marksQuestion Paper – 60 marks Set byMarked byVerified bySet byMarked by SQACentreSQA

Design and Manufacture: Design Unit N4N5 1. Identify factors that influence design and apply these in a simple design task. Identify factors that influence design and apply these in a design task. 2. Develop and communicate design concepts for a simple design task. Develop and communicate design concepts for a design task. 3. Evaluate an existing product. SUBJECT TO CENTRAL VERIFICATION
7
Design and Manufacture: Materials and Manufacture Unit N4N5 1. Investigate materials for manufacturing tasks in a workshop context Investigate materials for manufacturing tasks in a workshop context 2. Prepare for manufacturing tasks in a workshop context Prepare for manufacturing tasks in a workshop context 3. Plan and implement a manufacturing sequence for a prototype Plan and implement a manufacturing sequence for a prototype 4. Review manufacturing processes and a finished prototype SUBJECT TO VISITING VERIFICATION

Design and Manufacture: Added Value Unit/Course Assessment N4N5 Design and manufacture a product in response to a brief ASSIGNMENT (90 marks): Design Skills (45 marks) Practical Skills (45 marks) QUESTION PAPER (60 marks) SUBJECT TO CENTRAL VERIFICATION SET AND MARKED BY SQA

Unit Specifications Evidence Requirements for Units: Assessors should use their professional judgement, subject knowledge and experience, and understanding of their learners, to determine the most appropriate ways to generate evidence and the conditions and contexts in which they are used. Evidence should be gathered in combination with other Outcomes where possible.
10
Unit Assessment Support Packages Valid from August 2013 Designed to encourage professional judgement Provide broad-based tasks – allow assessors to choose appropriate context and forms of evidence Show range of approaches to generating assessment evidence Give information on the type of evidence which could be gathered and how this is to be judged against Assessment Standards
11
Design & Manufacture UASPs Package 1 Unit by Unit approach – discrete assessment tasks for each Unit Package 2 Combined across Units Package 3 Portfolio Approach
12
Added Value Unit Makes the Course more than the sum of its parts Builds on current Course assessment and Group Award approaches Defined as breadth, challenge and/or application as outlined in Building the Curriculum 5 May involve accumulation, assimilation, integration and/or application of skills, knowledge and understanding Controlled assessment –setting, conducting and marking
13
Moving on Workshop 1 and 2 will give you the opportunity to look at the Unit Specifications and Unit Assessment Support Packages in detail.
