2 HISTORY OF GREENWICH  1890 Founded as Woolwich Polytechnic, the second UK polytechnic  1892 First CGLI Certificate awarded  1894 Part-time day courses in association with the Ministry of War (Woolwich Arsenal)  1907 Institute with Recognised Teachers in the University of London  1935 First sandwich courses in the UK with the Ministry of War  1969 Amalgamated with parts of Hammersmith College of Art and Building  1970 Thames Polytechnic established. One of the first "new" polytechnics  1976 Incorporated Dartford College  1985 Incorporated Avery Hill College

3  1987 Incorporated Garnett College  1988 Incorporated some science courses from Goldsmiths College. Incorporated some science courses from City of London Polytechnic  1992 University of Greenwich  1993 Incorporated Thames College of Health Care Studies  1996 Incorporated Natural Resources Institute (NRI) and established campus at Medway  1999 Established Maritime Greenwich Campus

18 MEDWAY – OUT AND ABOUT  Chatham and Gillingham with major high street shops and restaurants are both within walking distance or a short bus ride from the University.  Accessible by car is Medway Valley which includes a multiplex, nightclub, bars and restaurants,  An ice skating rink.  Further afield is Bluewater, Europe’s largest shopping and leisure centre.  Chatham Maritime, 5 mins walk from the campus, is a major visitor attraction  Historic Rochester with the second oldest Cathedral in England and a Norman castle. Charles Dickens featured the town many times in his writings.
