2
Study – What is it to you? The devotion of time and attention to gaining knowledge of an academic subject, especially by means of books!
3
Study Skills for Third Level New skills are needed You will have to change your study habits It takes 21 days to change a habit
4
College …- Start with a New Approach. You will study a lot of new subjects You need to Learn and understand them in a different way Manage yourself independently Motivate yourself, set goals and connect yourself to your degree programme. Manage deadlines and organise your time differently
5
The Art of Studying …..The magic Mix Concentration -Dealing with Distractions Taking Notes Reading Writing Time management
6
Remember this ! You remember approximately 10 percent of what you read. You remember approximately 20 percent of what you hear. You remember approximately 30 percent of what you see. You remember approximately 50 percent of what you hear and see together. You remember approximately 70 percent of what you say (if you think as you are saying it). You remember approximately 90 percent of what you do.
7
Truth time- Finding your weak spots Identify the 3 main distractions to your college and academic success. List them… What can you do about it? Write down 2 possible solutions to each problem
8
Tips to Focus more Set study goals before you begin each period of study, get ready Brainstorm what you currently know on a scribble sheet Set some questions and learning goals Design a realistic small reward after you meet your specific goals. Break-up the content of study, Keep it varied where possible - mix up subjects and build in variety to increase interest.
9
Tips to Focus more Study in 30 – 40 minute slots Start with short Learning periods and build to longer periods only as fast as you maintain concentration. Do something quite different for 5- 10 minutes and return to your task Realize that you won't lose friends, respect, or a "good time" just because you're studying... these will keep. Plan the length of your study period by the task you have decided to cover, not by the clock. (Often the clock is one of the most serious distracters.)
10
Study –The Key Elements Note taking Reading Writing Time Management
11
Note-taking Try the Cornell Note taking system - the 5 R’s Record Reduce Recite Reflect Review Be Active engaged in in Note-Taking and in Reviewing notes !
12
Cornell Note Taking System Record. During the lecture, record in the main column as many meaningful facts and ideas as you can. Write legibly. Cornell Handout
13
Cornell Note Taking System R e d u c e As soon after as possible, summarize these ideas and facts concisely in a Recall Column. (Use a brain storm sheet…. Make a mind map) Summarising clarifies meanings, helps you make connections, strengthens memory. It also helps you prepare for exams gradually and well ahead of time.
14
Recite - Cover your notes….jottings and mind maps. -Say over and over the facts and ideas of the lecture as fully as you can but in your own words and with as much appreciation of the meaning as you can. ( saying out loud is best). You can record yourself if you want -Then, uncover your notes, check what you have said for accuracy This really helps to transfer the facts and ideas into your long term memory. Cornell Note Taking System
15
. Review Spend 10 minutes every week or so in a quick review of your notes you will retain most of what you have learned, Cornell Note Taking System

Notes Recall some tools
18
Use the SQRRR Reading Method Useful for any type of reading ; text books, articles, journals, essays SQRRR – Skim Question Read Recite Review SQRRR helps you understand and remember what you’ve read. It helps you to remain active and “switched on” while you read. It helps you to think critically and select what's valuable and relevant Use the handout, practice it for 21 days
19
Time management & motivation – You are responsible! You will spend time at scheduled lectures You will be responsible for organising the rest of your time so that you meet deadlines. This may seem hard at first but these skills develop over time When working alone, it is important to stay focused Your levels of motivation may be strong or weak This influences your ability and willingness to learn. Tip:Study groups can help you to maintain your focus when working towards a deadline
20
When learning, persevere – Explore all the options and angles It is important to keep in mind that all problems have more than one solution. Critical thinking is so important because it helps you figure out: How to best solve a problem Whether to accept or reject a claim How to best answer a question How to best handle a situation
21
Ready Steady Go! Being prepared for Study (Do I have everything I need in place NOW?) 1. Assess and identify what you already know ( Brainstorm) 2. Define the learning goal (set 3 goal questions) 3. Check your personal resources (e.g. textbooks, access to the library, access to a computer/internet or a quiet study area) 4. Know the task requirements (essay, test, multiple choice, etc...) (What exactly do I need to do? Break into small steps) 5. Know how your performance will be evaluated (How will I be graded…How will I know If I have learned what I set out to learn?) 6.Consider your motivation level (Am I really Interested & motivated?) 7. Check your level of anxiety (How am I feeling?)
22
Monitoring and Reflection Reflect on how you’re learning…. keeping track of what works and what doesn't work for you Monitor your own learning by questioning and self-testing Provide your own feedback – evaluation Keep concentration and motivation high
23
One last Tip – Keep mobile devices off the desk
