1 Starter: Kinship Diagrams
YOUR TASK (1) I’m going to give you a ‘family situation’ below. In pairs, create a kinship diagram to reflect this on your mini wipe-boards. Remember symbols (male/female) and, if possible, codes! 3 minutes Ego is one of three children to a mother and father who are married. Ego is the only son. Ego’s mother has two sisters – one has two sons. Ego’s father has one sister and two brothers – one of the brothers has a daughter and the sister has three sons.

2 Starter: Did you get it?! Ego is one of three children to a mother and father who are married. Ego is the only son. Ego’s mother has two sisters – one has two sons. Ego’s father has one sister and two brothers – one of the brothers has a daughter and the sister has a son.

3 What are the different patterns of descent?
AS Anthropology ANTH1 Being Human What are the different patterns of descent?

4 By the end of the lesson YOU will:
Be able to demonstrate your memories of kinship codes and diagrams. Be able to recognise three different descent patterns. Have created a kinship diagram, utilising your knowledge of kinship and descent.

5 Different patterns of descent…
Last lesson we looked at the Na. Can you remember what descent pattern they demonstrated? There are 3 main descent patterns you need to know… Matrilineal and patrilineal descent patterns are both examples of unilineal descent – where descent is traced through one parent. The third type you need to know is a non-lineal descent pattern and it is called cognatic descent. Cognatic descent is where both matrilineal and patrilineal descent are used and acknowledged. Which does Western culture tend to have? Patrilineal: descent follows the male line. People are related if they can trace descent through males to the same male ancestor. Both males and females inherit membership but only males can pass it onto their descendants. Matrilineal: descent follows the female line. People are related if they can trace descent through females to the same female ancestor. Both males and females inherit membership but only females can pass it onto their descendants.

YOUR TASK (2) I’m going to show you two kinship diagrams – one matrilineal, one patrilineal. Answer the question for each on a scrap piece of paper, individually and in silence! 5 minutes These will be peer-marked…

8 Q1. For which of the following pairs of relatives are both individuals (highlighted in purple) members of Ego's patrilineage? A. 7 and 12 B. 13 and 18 C. 23 and 24 D. 30 and 33 E. 36 and 37

9 Q2 Which of the relatives indicated in purple are in Ego's matrilineage? A. 15 only B. 15 and 3 only C. 15, 3 and 23 only D. 15, 3, 23 and 29 only E. All of the above

10 You will be put into five groups. Using the cut-out pieces provided…
YOUR TASK (3) You will be put into five groups. Using the cut-out pieces provided… Construct an accurate kinship diagram for the EGO described on your hand-out. Depending on whether yours is a matrilineal or patrilineal descent pattern, colour in the kin accordingly to show the descent line. Blu-tack the end result onto your piece of wall for the other groups to check! Beat 20 minutes!

11 Create your own kinship diagram… Correct code and format!
YOUR TASK (4) Create your own kinship diagram… Correct code and format! Descent pattern 15 minutes

12 “Is kin based on biology?”
PLENARY “Is kin based on biology?” Individually and in silence write YES or NO on your voting slip and post in the ballot box. BE WARNED: you may be asked to justify your decision!
