3 The Bird Our state bird is a Cardinal It is 8 to 9 inches long In the spring it produces 3-4 pale blue eggs with brown spots Males are red, but females are brown

4 The Capitol Our capitol is Springfield, Illinois It is located almost in the middle of the state Click the state to take a tour of Springfield

5 The Tree The state tree is a White Oak These trees make acorns They can be up to 100 feet tall Click the TV to learn more about trees

6 The Insect The state’s insect is the Monarch Butterfly Just like all butterflies, the Monarch goes through four developmental stages

7 The Flag The state flag is white with an eagle in the center It was recreated in 1969

8 The Population There are over 12 million people living in Illinois Most of them live in big cities
