Socio-Cultural Factors are the larger scale forces within cultures and societies that affect the thoughts feelings and behaviours of individuals.

Gender Is the sport male or female dominant? Is it played more by males or females? Golf: a sport that involves a lot of technique and is easily picked up by both male and females. Does not revolve around power so gender does not effect golf a lot.

Age Is the sport played by all ages? Young or old? What is the dominant age group? Golf: seen mainly as an elderly sport because it is slow and played by a lot of retired persons. Starting to get more young people involved but still viewed as an elderly sport.

Socio-Economic Status Your status based on work experience/job title and the money you make or your family makes. Golf: being a sport that involves expensive equipment and fees to play this sport attracts people with money to be involved.

Ethnicity Different ethnic groups excel in different sports, and so the popularity of these sports grow within these groups. Golf: the sport is generally played more by European countries, with African, indian and island golfers a very rare thing.

Accessibility How easy is it to play the sport? For some sports all you need is space and a ball, but others need indoor arenas, equipment or mountains. Golf: Golf courses are dotted all over the place, but they are expensive to play on. Clubs are also expensive and dress codes make it difficult as well. Hitting in a field with a club is an option but can be dangerous.

Culture Different cultures are involved in different sports, but also come cultures make it hard to play some sports. Golf: Pacific Island and Maori cultures are not known for their love of golf, where as other European cultures thrive on it.

Religion Peoples belief or religion can play a part in their participation in different sports. Some religions believe that sport is wrong or don’t encourage their females to be involved in sport. Golf: Religion does not play a huge part in golf but golf is not big in the Islamic countries.

Stereotypes Different sports have stereotypes around who participates. Rugby players are tough, big and muscular and netball is played by girls….these are all stereotypes. Golf: stereotypically a sport for elderly or wealthy people.
