Introduction to Psalm 96 Many Psalms encourage God’s people to worship with zeal and sincerity. (Psalms 96-100) Psalm 96 is a portion of a Psalm that was written when David brought the Ark to Jerusalem (1 Chr. 16:1, 7; 23-33) While we do not follow the same forms of worship today we still have… –The same reasons to worship. –The same attitudes in worship.

Psalm 96:1-6 God’s Greatness Deserves Great Praise Great ways to praise and honor God (1-3) Singing –A New Song (Psalm 33:3; 40:3; 98:1; Revelation 5:9; 14:3) –Blessing His name (Psalm 100:4; 103:1-2) Telling others the good news of His salvation (Psalm 35:9; 40:9-10, 16; 67:2-3; 71:15) Telling of His glory and wondrous works (Psalm 66:2-5; 77:11-12)

Psalm 96:1-6 God’s Greatness Deserves Great Praise Great reasons to praise and honor God (4-6) Other gods are idols, but the LORD made the heavens. (Isaiah 44:9-10, 13-23) His presence radiates honor, majesty, strength & beauty.

Psalm 96:7-10 How to Honor the Lord Appropriately Ascribe to Him the glory that is due Him (7-8) Worship appropriately (8b-9) –Bring an offering. –Worship in the beauty of holiness. (Isaiah 1:13; Psalm 29:2) –Worship in fear and trembling (cf. Philippians 2:9-12) Tell others of His greatness (10) –He reigns as King –He has created and established the world –He will judge the people righteously.

Psalm 96:11-13 Worship the Lord with Joy All creation rejoices and praises God (11-12; cf. 97:1) His righteous judgment is cause for rejoicing (13) –He is coming to judge the earth. –He will judge with righteousness –He will judge with truth.
