What are quality tools? Quality tools are graphic organizers designed and collected by David Langford. David Langford has worked in the business and educational setting for many years and has a B.S. in education as well as a Masters degree in Educational Administration and Supervision.

The purpose of todays activity?
Help participant organize and develop strategies to improve the learning process and validate the level of understanding of events. Quality tools can help collect, clarify, and support hard data.

Plan stage 1-4 Understand the system and select the team
What are the possible problems and who will handle the possibilities? Define the probletunity Operational definition of topic/issue Study the current situation What data is needed? How will it be collected? How will it be displayed? What is the prediction? Analyze the cause What are the dominate causes?

Step onE: (who) a team/Group
Today topics: Student achievement, Discipline, Common core, Rti, PARCC Today we are the team. STEP TWO: (WHAT) OPERATIONAL DEFINITION Clearly define what student achievement means to the team, class, building. What is our operational definition of Student Achievement? “Student achievement is the ability of an individual to reach their highest potential through authentic learning experiences while providing evidence of successful growth.”

STEP 3: Affinity Diagram Data collection and categorization Specific topic: Difficulty in increasing student achievement Examples: Time management Parents Students Teachers State mandates New testing system Administrative support

Step 4: Interrelationship digraph
Used to study between 4-9 factors of priority Labeled categories from STEP 3 Use this to study the cause and effect between factors Which has the greater impact on the other Rank based on highest # of outs (In, Out) Time Mandates Student Motivation Teacher Parent

Step 5: Force field analysis
Select the topic from STEP 4 for Force Field Topic. Use as a visual listing for driving (Positive) and preventing (Negative) improvements. What is affecting the process? Focus on was to reduce Preventing Factors. Prioritize 2-3 preventing factors Driving Preventing Good preparation More practice More relaxed Higher engagement Collaboration Lack of preparation Lack of practice Lack of engagement Passive Anxious Frustration

Next step… do, stage 5 and 6 TAGE 7- Study /Review event
Once Preventing Factors have been prioritized the team/group will then work to reduce or remove preventing factors in order. If…Then… Multi- Voting Hot Dot Five (5) Whys ? TAGE 7- Study /Review event STAGE 8 & 9- Act/Reflect and establish future plans

Quality tools are effective teaching tools
Work in various ways Math Science Language Arts Staff Meetings Improve collaboration Don’t be afraid to modify them to fit your needs BUT be careful how drastic your modifications are based on validity They take time The process is a cycle
