18-3 Hydrogen Ions and pH The self-ionization of water is …. HOH ↔ H+ + OH- Ion Product Constant for Water Kw =[H+][OH-]=1.0 x 10-14M2 Use this to solve for [H+] or [OH-] given the other. (See example problem 1 pg 651)

pH and pOH The pH scale was 'invented' by Soren Sorenson to help wine-makers keep track of acidity in wine. The pH scale starts at 0 (very acid) to 14 (very basic) pH = -log[H+] pOH = -log[OH-] pH + pOH = 14 See Example problem 2 and practice problems pg 653.
3
[H+] and [OH-] from pH [H+]= log-1(-pH) See example problem 4 and practice problems page 655. Once you have the [H+], you can solve for Ka. See example problem 5 p 657. Once you solve for [H+], you can solve for [OH-] using the Kw equation.

Indicators Indicators can are substances that change color in the presence of acids and/or bases. See the hand-out chart for indicators.
