Current Status of PURE As of January 1, 2006: –19,000 +, subjects recruited from 5 centres in India –11,503, subjects recruited from 11 centres in China –2008, subjects recruited from 1 centre in South Africa –380, subjects recruited from 2 centres in Colombia

Timetable Vanguard Phase Initiate study in all countries and address logistic issues. –Target 35,000 subjects from 100 communities –Recruitment: 1000 subjects/ country. Main Study (January 2006 to December 2007/ Early 2008) recruitment of an additional 105,000 subjects 3-yearly follow-up for upto 12 years (2006 onwards, until 2018)

Timetable (2/2) Analysis and Publications –Concept/Design, Bangalore Pilot: in 2006 –Vanguard in 2007 onwards: based on baseline data from limited number of countries –2008/ 2009 onwards: publications based on the entire study and from all countries –Bloods stored until high power for nested case- control analyses or specific hypotheses

Additional Developmental work, Protocols and Sub-Studies Detailed protocols for Pulmonary component, injuries, depression, cancers and societal factors Development of criteria for outcomes Development of sub-studies, e.g. PURE Child

Immediate Requirements (next 6 months) Proper sampling and recruitment strategy including complete Family Census. Ensuring completeness of all procedures. Immediate and weekly data transfers to PHRI and rapid resolution of queries. Maintaining high quality. Continuing efforts at fund raising (overall and local)
