1  Set up Page 18 in notebook: The New Deal & Its Legacy (from Friday)  LEFT side: How did the expansion of government during the New Deal affect the nation?  Remember: Friday is a TEST on the New Deal and Great Depression

2  In the 1930’s, as a part of the Federal Art Project—a government program created to provide jobs for the unemployed— murals were painted in public buildings across the country. Artist Conrad Albrizio created this mural, The New Deal, in 1934. What do you see? Who is the man standing in the center? Why do you think he is dressed this way? What do you think happened to the man sitting in the center? What are the other people in the mural doing?

3  What was FDR’s personal background?  Why was his 1903 visit to a New York City tenement significant?  What promises did he make in the 1932 presidential election?

4 1. The First New Deal (33.2; pp. 414-416) 2. Protests and Political Challenges (33.3; pp. 417-418) 3. The Second New Deal (33.4; pp. 419-421) 4. Social and Political Impacts (33.5; pp. 422- 425)  Plan on the RIGHT side of p.18 Title with section number and name Key question for that section & answer 5 illustrations or symbols (look at images in the chapter for ideas) 5 key words or phrases

5  Seat 1: Historian: leads the group in reading the section from chp. 33 & in answering the key question  Seat 2: Layout designer: leads the group in planning the mural and is responsible for the layout and overall look  Seat 3: Artistic Supervisor: leads the group in creating the mural and delegating parts  Seat 4: Project Editor: leads the group in adding a plague for the panel of the mural

6  Section 33.2: What were the key programs of the First New Deal and how did they affect Americans?  Section 33.3: Who were the critics of the First New Deal and what were their criticisms?  Section 33.4: What were the key programs of the Second New Deal and how did they affect Americans?  Section 33.5: How did the First and Second New Deals affect various groups of Americans?

7  Go back to the left side of p. 18 and answer the essential question.  Work with your group, dividing up the tasks to create the mural. You may choose to just work with your group, or combine with the group that shares the same topic.  Share with the class  7 th period: Return roll to the media center

8  Go back to Page 17 in notebook: Human Impact of the Great Depression  LEFT side: What caused the most severe economic crisis in American history? Who was Lorena Hickok? (Chp. 32:1) Why did she travel to the U.S. in the 1930’s? What did she learn about the hardships experienced by ordinary Americans during the Great Depression?  Findings from U.S. travels: ________________  Remember: Friday is a TEST!

9  Each person from your group will “explore” 2 states and come back to the group to report. Take notes on the left side at the bottom under “Findings from U.S. travels”  Include one quote Read the letter (2 letters from 2 different states) Look at the pictures Report back to group

10  An appropriate date, salutation, and closing  A brief introduction summarizing the states you visited and the types of people you met.  A description of 2 states Hardships people faced A quotation and one fact from the reading Any relevant key terms  Conclusion summarizing your thoughts about how ordinary Americans endured the hardships they faced during this time period.

11  New Deal Activity  6 Groups You will be handing in one paper for your group You will be presenting information on 2 of the New Deal programs to the class  After everyone has shared, we will create a human spectrum on where each of the programs falls for the effect on life in the 1930’s Most positive EffectLeast positive Effect
