2 Rules No long list of rules! Have a few general rules (5 or 6)
Come up with classroom rules and consequences with your students I use a system

3 Example of Rules Come to class with a positive attitude
Be seated before the tardy bell rings with required materials and sharpened pencils Sit in your assigned seat daily Follow directions the first time they are given Respect others No personal grooming during class

Minimize the amount of class time spent doing this I use a numbering system Have students turn in HW as they enter the room If a student is absent – make it so they can get their assignments with out asking you

9 Keep their attention – change it up
Have a lesson starter everyday Review questions, ACT prep, journal free writes, etc. Don’t lecture for the entire period – switch “gears” every 20 minutes or so Get the students active using the information they have just learned as often as possible

10 Minimize Down Time Classroom “down-time” is the source of many classroom management problems Have an additional, meaningful, activity ready Vocabulary crosswords, mind teasers, etc.

11 R-E-S-P-E-C-T It’s the key!
When your students respect you, your classroom is a lot easier to manage To get respect, you must give respect Offer a way out – if a student says something disrespectful, give them a chance to rephrase

12 RESPECT Don’t hold grudges
If a student challenges your authority in class, do not stoop to their level – If you do, you lose the respect of the rest of the class Don’t take things personally – Keep your cool.

13 Practices that work Set high but attainable expectations for your students. Don’t just concentrate on what they are doing wrong – complement and encourage Be reasonable and consistent Don’t act like you know everything – it is OK to say “I don’t know” or “Oops, I made a mistake.”
