A Survey Through The Heidelberg Catechism LORD’S DAY #40

Heidelberg Catechism Q. #105: What does God require in the sixth commandment? A. That I, neither in thought, or in word or gesture, much less in deed, dishonor, hate, wound, or kill my neighbor, whether by myself or by another, but lay aside all desire of revenge; moreover, that I harm not myself nor willfully expose myself to any danger. Therefore, also, the magistrate is armed with the sword to prevent murder.

Hatred is not, itself, a sin; nor is it always wrong.  Ps. 97:10 - O you who love the L ORD, hate evil! He preserves the lives of his saints; he delivers them from the hand of the wicked.  Ps. 119:104 - Through your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way.  Amos 5:15a - Hate evil, and love good, and establish justice in the gate;

Psalm 139:22 Do I not hate those who hate you, O L ORD ? And do I not loathe those who rise up against you? I hate them with complete hatred; I count them my enemies.

The Lord, himself, “hates”.  Ps. 5:4-6 - For you are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil may not dwell with you. The boastful shall not stand before your eyes; you hate all evildoers. You destroy those who speak lies; the L ORD abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.  Ps. 11:5 - The L ORD tests the righteous, but his soul hates the wicked and the one who loves violence.  Ps. 45:6-7a - Your throne, O God, is forever and ever. The scepter of your kingdom is a scepter of uprightness; you have loved righteousness and hated wickedness.

Hate-Speech Laws “In law, hate speech is any speech, gesture or conduct, writing, or display which is forbidden because it may incite violence or prejudicial action against or by a protected individual or group, or because it disparages or intimidates a protected individual or group. The law may identify a a (sic) protected group by certain characteristics.” Wikipedia

Exodus 19:9a-13a  When Moses told the words of the people to the L ORD, the L ORD said to Moses, “Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their garments and be ready for the third day. For on the third day the L ORD will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people.  And you shall set limits for the people all around, saying, ‘Take care not to go up into the mountain or touch the edge of it. Whoever touches the mountain shall be put to death. No hand shall touch him, but he shall be stoned or shot; whether beast or man, he shall not live.’

Exodus 21  12 “Whoever strikes a man so that he dies shall be put to death. 13 But if he did not lie in wait for him, but God let him fall into his hand, then I will appoint for you a place to which he may flee. 14 But if a man willfully attacks another to kill him by cunning, you shall take him from my altar, that he may die.  15 “Whoever strikes his father or his mother shall be put to death.  16 “Whoever steals a man and sells him, and anyone found in possession of him, shall be put to death.  17 “Whoever curses his father or his mother shall be put to death.

Genesis 9  5 And for your lifeblood I will require a reckoning: from every beast I will require it and from man. From his fellow man I will require a reckoning for the life of man.  6 “Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image.

Heidelberg Catechism Q. #106: But this commandment seems to speak only of murder? A. In forbidding murder, God teaches us that He abhors the root of murder, as envy, hatred, anger, and desire of revenge; and that He accounts all these as murder. Q. #107: But is it enough that we do not kill our neighbor in any such way? A. No; for when God forbids envy, hatred, and anger, He commands us to love our neighbor as ourselves: to show patience, peace meekness, mercy, and all kindness towards him, prevent his hurt as much as in us lies, and do good even to our enemies.

Westminster Larger Catechism Q. 134. Which is the sixth commandment? A. The sixth commandment is, Thou shalt not kill.

Westminster Larger Catechism Q. 135. What are the duties required in the sixth commandment? A. The duties required in the sixth commandment are all careful studies, and lawful endeavors, to preserve the life of ourselves and others by resisting all thoughts and purposes, subduing all passions, and avoiding all occasions, temptations, and practices, which tend to the unjust taking away the life of any; by just defence thereof against violence, patient bearing of the hand of God, quietness of mind, cheerfulness of spirit; a sober use of meat, drink, physic [i.e., medicine], sleep, labour, and recreations;

Westminster Larger Catechism by charitable thoughts, love, compassion, meekness, gentleness, kindness; peaceable, mild and courteous speeches and behaviour; forbearance, readiness to be reconciled, patient bearing and forgiving of injuries, and requiting good for evil; comforting and succouring the distressed and protecting and defending the innocent.

Westminster Larger Catechism Q. 136. What are the sins forbidden in the sixth commandment? A. The sins forbidden in the sixth commandment are, all taking away the life of ourselves, or of others, except in case of public justice, lawful war, or necessary defence; the neglecting or withdrawing the lawful and necessary means of preservation of life; sinful anger, hatred, envy, desire of revenge; all excessive passions, distracting cares; immoderate use of meat, drink, labor, and recreations; provoking words, oppression, quarreling, striking, wounding, and whatsoever else tends to the destruction of the life of any.
