Literature Circles Objective: Increase students’ understanding of literature through meaningful analysis, discussion, and presentation. There will be a BIG final project!

Literature Circles are small groups of students who meet together to talk about books they have read. Each member of the group has a job with certain responsibilities. If the group is to work effectively, each person must do his job. Participation and self-control are important ingredients in successful Literature Circles.

Scholar’s Expectations Have intellectual courage by: Taking risks Respectfully challenging others Actively participating Display intellectual leadership: Take the initiative Encourage each other to accomplish the tasks Tactfully challenge others to be thorough and insightful in their responses.

Habits of a Scholar… Demonstrate intellectual humility Practice scholarly behavior by listening actively; don’t interrupt others or have side conversations Do not steal others’ opportunities to learn and think Be open-minded Show intellectual aggressiveness Defend your thoughts with evidence after thoroughly reading, interpreting, and analyzing Refer to the literature/text for evidence Actively participate

Everyone has a job and task ① Discussion Director ② Passage Master ③ Summarizer ④ Connector ⑤ Investigator- (if more than four) ⑥ Illustrator- (if more than five) *Take notes of of the expectations/tasks for each job..

Discussion Director Help all actively participate in the discussion. Keep discussion focused- scholars stay on task. TASKS: 1)Create a double bubble map comparing two ideas. 2) 4+ UTS questions : 1)Theme 2)Change over Time 3)Plot, Character, Setting 4)Unanswered Questions 3)Share questions with group and write down their responses.

Passage Master Help people notice the most interesting, funny, sad, puzzling or important sections. TASKS: 1)Choose 4+passages from the assigned reading. 2)Create a dialectical journal. (quotes on left; significance on right ) 3)Share your passages (reading aloud, ask a member to read, or have group silently read). 4)Discuss responses with group.

SUMMARIZER Summarize BIG stuff. Analyze its impact and discuss different causes and effects. TASKS: 1)Identify major events ( written summary ) 2)Create a Multi Flow Map (Cause & Effect) 3)Share your summary and thinking map

Connector Connect the book to the real world. TASKS: 1.Create a Circle Map divided into four sections: 1.Self 2.Family 3.School 4.Community, society, or world 2.Make a connection for each quotation 3. Share circle map and write down two more connections from your group.

Investigator Dig up background information: Geography, culture, or history on setting. Author’s life and other works Pictures, objects, or maps that illustrate elements mentioned NOT a formal research report. (Bring info that is not provided in the text but will help everyone understand the content). Choose ideas that struck you as puzzling or curious. TASKS: 1.Identify topic to research 2.Use resources such as the Internet, library, or interview a person 3.Create a bubble or circle map to record the ideas you plan to share 4.Bring and share information your found.

Illustrator Draw, paint, etc. some kind of picture related to the reading. Be literal or symbolic; you may label your picture with words TASKS: 1.Create a flow map that shows the story in chronological order. Maybe: 1.Story board (Comic Strip) 2.Symbols or major events 3.Changes of mood over time 2.Picture = in COLOR. 3.Spend time on it.
