Social Science Summative Explanation and Example

LEARNING GOAL: O This assignment is designed to demonstrate your initial understanding of the 3 disciplines of social science (Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology) as well as the Social Science Inquiry Method.

In this assignment you will (success criteria): O Access the article titled ‘The Importance of Play in Promoting Healthy Child Development and Maintaining Strong Parent-Child Bond: Focus on Children in Poverty’ O http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/1 29/1/e204.full.pdf http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/1 29/1/e204.full.pdf O Or there is a copy of the article on the classnet website (St. Benedict, Grade 11, History, HSP3U Penner, Introduction to Social Sciences, Summatives)

O From the information in the article, write ONE research question from EACH of the perspective of anthropology, psychology and sociology. O You will have 3 different research questions based on the same article specific to each discipline. O Identify and explain the independent and dependent variables in each of the research questions. O For each of your research questions, you must use evidence from the article to provide a thorough answer/explanation to your question. O Your explanation must have 3 main points of information from the article related to the specific discipline. O Your explanation must also identify how and why the facts in your explanation fit into that discipline. O Use specific points from the class lecture to explain how each discipline would analyze this case.

Let’s Do an Example Together… O With this Ted Talk: O Paul Piff is an Assistant Professor of Psychology and Social Behavior at the University of California, Irvine. In particular, he studies how wealth (having it or not having it) can affect interpersonal relationships. O His surprising studies include running rigged games of Monopoly, tracking how those who drive expensive cars behave versus those driving less expensive vehicles and even determining that rich people are literally more likely to take candy from children than the less well-off. The results often don't paint a pretty picture about the motivating forces of wealth. He writes, "specifically, I have been finding that increased wealth and status in society lead to increased self-focus and, in turn, decreased compassion, altruism, and ethical behavior."
